How this guide was built
The starting point is PAGASA's own climate page, which states that typhoons originate near the Marianas and Carolines and move north-westward, which spares Mindanao from most direct hits - and explicitly notes this makes the southern Philippines desirable for agriculture.
That is not a travel-marketing claim but the national weather agency's own framing, and it changes the advice completely: for Davao the question is not which months to avoid but what is in season.

Durian season, and the rules about it
Davao is the durian capital and the fruit peaks around August to October. Eat it at the market, where it is cheapest and freshest and someone will open it properly.
It is genuinely banned from most hotel rooms, aircraft and many enclosed public spaces, and the signs are not decorative - the smell persists for hours and hotels charge cleaning fees. Pomelo, mangosteen and marang are the gentler local specialities, and Davao cacao has made the city the centre of Philippine chocolate.
Kadayawan, the week the city fills
The Kadayawan festival in August celebrates the harvest with street dancing and floral floats. It is the busiest and most interesting week to be here, and accommodation tightens accordingly.
Unlike Sinulog in Cebu, it does not overwhelm the city to the point of being unmanageable - but book ahead if those are your dates.
Mount Apo, where the season does matter
Mount Apo is 2,954 metres, the highest point in the Philippines, and climbing it is a two-to-four-day expedition requiring permits and a registered guide. This is the one Davao activity with a real seasonal answer: the drier months from December to May give safer trails and better summit visibility.
Routes start from Kidapawan, Digos or Kapatagan and conditions turn quickly at altitude. Arrange it through a licensed operator well before arriving - the permit process is not something to begin on the day.
Samal Island, fifteen minutes offshore
Ferries cross to Samal in about fifteen minutes and run frequently, so it works as a day trip or a base. The island has white sand beaches on the far side, resorts across the price range, and the Monfort bat cave - one of the largest Geoffroy's rousette colonies in the world, estimated in the millions.
The short, sheltered crossing means Samal stays accessible in weather that would stop an open-sea transfer elsewhere in the country.
What nobody tells you about Mindanao advisories
The question comes up because of Mindanao's reputation, and the honest answer has two parts. Davao City itself has a strong reputation for public order and is routinely one of the more orderly large cities in the country.
Security advisories for other parts of Mindanao are real and vary by province. Check your own government's current advice for specific areas rather than treating the island as one place - and note that blanket warnings covering all of Mindanao are the commonest error in travel writing about this region.
The Philippine Eagle Centre, in any month
The Philippine eagle is critically endangered with a wild population in the low hundreds, and it is one of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world - a forest raptor that hunts monkeys and flying lemurs.
The centre outside the city runs a captive breeding programme and is the only reliable place to see one. It is a conservation facility rather than a zoo, the birds are there because they cannot be released, and it is open regardless of season.
Where to stay, and the ferry to Samal
Downtown Davao near Roxas Avenue puts you close to the markets and the night food stalls. Lanang toward the north-east is where the larger resorts and the Samal ferry terminal sit.
For a three-day trip downtown works: it is close to the eagle centre road, the markets and the crossing. If your plan is mostly Samal, staying on the island is calmer - and the fifteen-minute crossing is short enough to be reliable in almost any weather.
The markets, and what to look for
Bankerohan is the main public market and the best place to see what Davao actually grows: durian in season, pomelo, mangosteen, marang, and the cacao that made the city the centre of Philippine chocolate.
Single-origin Davao chocolate is a genuine local product rather than a souvenir invention. The better bars are worth space in your bag, and unlike durian they travel.
Why Davao feels different from Cebu
Our Davao inventory is small compared with Cebu or Palawan, and that is informative rather than a gap. Davao is a large, prosperous working city that is not primarily a tourist destination - fewer touts, fewer tours, more ordinary urban life.
For a visitor that cuts both ways: less is packaged for you, and what you do find is not staged. Combined with the weather reliability, it makes Davao the most forgiving place in the country to travel independently at short notice.
Eden Nature Park, and the cooler air above the city
Eden Nature Park is a mountain resort above Davao with noticeably cooler air, ziplines and gardens - a straightforward day and a contrast to the heat below.
It works in most weather because it is a hillside resort rather than a boat trip, which fits the wider pattern here: Davao's attractions are land-based and therefore rarely cancelled.
