Manila gets the international arrivals, Boracay gets the Instagram posts, but Cebu City is where the Philippines actually lives. It is loud, historic, permanently under construction, and completely addictive. More importantly for travelers: it is a world-class logistics hub. From Cebu you can reach Moalboal in 2 hours, Bohol in 2 hours by ferry, Oslob whale sharks in 3 hours, and a dozen other islands with one short hop. This is the guide that treats Cebu seriously.
Getting to Cebu
Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) is the second-busiest airport in the Philippines and has direct international connections most travelers do not know about:
- From Singapore: Cebu Pacific and Scoot fly direct. Around 3 hours. Fares from SGD 40 one-way if you book 6-8 weeks ahead, but SGD 80-150 is more typical.
- From Seoul (Incheon): Korean Air, Jin Air, and Cebu Pacific fly direct to Cebu. This is the most popular Korean charter route in the Philippines after Boracay-Kalibo. Direct flight time around 4 hours.
- From Manila: 1-hour flight, dozens of daily departures on Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, and PAL. Fares from ₱800 one-way booked in advance.
- From Sydney/Brisbane/Melbourne: Cebu Pacific runs direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Cebu. Check current schedules as these routes were resumed in 2025. Otherwise connect through Manila or Singapore.
From Mactan Airport to Cebu City proper: Grab costs ₱200-350. The airport is on Mactan Island connected to the mainland by two bridges. Traffic on the bridges can be brutal during rush hours (7-9 AM and 5-8 PM) — if you land at those times, budget 1 hour for the crossing.

Where to Stay in Cebu City (2026 Price Ranges)
Cebu City has three main accommodation zones. Which one you pick depends entirely on why you are here.
- IT Park (Apas, Lahug): Modern, clean, walkable. Full of restaurants and coffee shops. The best area for first-timers. Mid-range hotels from ₱1,800/night. This is where most Korean and Singaporean visitors base themselves.
- Cebu Business Park (Ayala area): Upscale, mall-anchored. Marriott, Radisson, and similar chains cluster here. Rooms from ₱4,000/night. Excellent if you want reliability and you are connecting to other islands rather than exploring the city.
- Colon/Carbon area (old city): Budget options from ₱600/night. Close to the historic sites. Not recommended for first-timers without local context — the area is lively but requires street smarts.
- Mactan Island (near airport): If you are using Cebu as a beach destination rather than a city base, this is where the beach resorts are. Plantation Bay, Crimson Resort, and Shangri-La Mactan are here. Resort prices from ₱5,000-25,000/night for beachfront.
What to Do in Cebu City
Cebu has 500 years of layered history and one of the most chaotic food scenes in Southeast Asia. Start with the oldest things.
- Magellan's Cross (free): The wooden cross planted by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, marking the spot where the first Filipinos were baptized as Catholics. It sits in a small chapel next to the Basilica. Takes 15 minutes, but the weight of the moment hits you when you read the dates.
- Basilica Minore del Santo Nino (free): The oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines, founded 1565. Houses the image of the Santo Nino, a figure central to Philippine Catholicism. The Sinulog Festival each January draws 2 million people here. Go early morning — it gets packed by 8 AM.
- Fort San Pedro (₱30 entrance): The oldest and smallest fort in the Philippines, built by the Spanish in 1565. Small museum inside. Best visited alongside the Basilica — they are walking distance apart.
- Carbon Market: The oldest public market in Cebu, chaotic and brilliant. Dried fish, local produce, native delicacies, and absolutely no tourist infrastructure. Go with a local if possible, or just walk in confidently. Budget ₱200 and eat everything someone hands you.
- Tops Lookout (₱150 entrance + ₱350 Grab each way): Up in the mountains above the city, the view over Cebu Strait, Mactan Island, and the distant Leyte Peninsula at golden hour is genuinely spectacular. Worth the trip.
- Temple of Leah (₱50 entrance): An eccentric Greco-Roman-style temple built by a husband as a tribute to his late wife. Bizarre, touching, and unique. Good for photos.
The Real Reason to Visit Cebu: Day Trips
Cebu City is at its best as a base for the surrounding region. These are the essential day trips:
- Moalboal sardine run (2 hours south): A tornado of millions of sardines that has lived just offshore here for decades. You do not need to go far — 10 meters from the beach, snorkeling only. One of the most remarkable marine experiences in Southeast Asia. Paired with excellent diving at Pescador Island. Read our full Moalboal guide for logistics and accommodation.
- Oslob whale sharks (3 hours south): You can swim alongside whale sharks in a designated bay. Morally complex — the sharks are fed to keep them close, which alters their natural behavior. If you go: arrive before 6 AM, join the 7 AM boats, and be out by 9 AM before the crowds arrive. Cost: ₱1,500 for the experience including equipment. Make up your own mind on the ethics.
- Bohol via fast ferry: 2-hour ferry from Cebu port (₱500-600 one way). A full-day Bohol itinerary hits the Chocolate Hills, Tarsier Sanctuary, and Loboc River cruise. Doable as a very full day trip from Cebu, better as 2-3 nights.
- Kawasan Falls (3 hours southwest): A three-tiered turquoise waterfall in the mountains above Badian. Canyoneering from Matutinao down to the falls (4-5 hours, ₱1,800-2,200 with guide) is one of the best adventure activities in the Visayas. Not for people who do not want to get wet and jump off rocks.
- Malapascua Island (2 hours north + 30-minute bangka): Famous worldwide for thresher sharks. Every morning before sunrise, dive boats head to Monad Shoal where thresher sharks come to be cleaned at around 20-25 meters depth. One of only a few places on earth where thresher sharks are reliably seen. Dive cost: around ₱1,200 per dive plus equipment.
Where to Eat in Cebu (Real Prices)
Cebu has the best food culture of any city in the Philippines. The local lechon (roasted pig) alone justifies the trip.
- CNT Lechon: The most famous lechon in Cebu. The skin crackles, the meat is seasoned from the inside (not just the outside), and the liver sauce they serve with it is essential. ₱350-₱500 for a proper serving. Worth every peso.
- Rico's Lechon: CNT's main rival, beloved by locals who debate this with the same intensity as football supporters. Try both and form your own opinion.
- Lantaw Floating Native Restaurant: Seafood and Filipino food on a floating platform over the water in Cordova, Mactan Island. Gorgeous setting, reasonable prices (₱200-400 per dish). Worth the Grab ride out.
- IT Park food strip: The stretch along IT Park Boulevard at night becomes a food market — Korean BBQ joints, Filipino comfort food, Japanese ramen, fresh fruit shakes. Budget ₱300-600 for dinner here.
- Zubuchon: Anthony Bourdain called this the best roasted pig he had ever eaten. The outlet in IT Park is reliable. Another Cebu lechon institution.

Five days in Cebu with a mix of city days and day trips, mid-range budget, flying from Manila: ₱25,000-35,000 total per person. Add ₱5,000-8,000 if you're combining with a 2-night Bohol extension.
Best Time to Visit Cebu
Cebu City itself is a year-round destination — it is sheltered enough that no month is truly unvisitable. The Sinulog Festival in the third week of January is the single most spectacular event in Philippine cultural life: street dancing, religious processions, parties, and 2 million people. Book accommodation 3-4 months ahead if you plan to visit during Sinulog. The rest of the year, March-May (hot season) and November-February (cooler, drier) are the easiest months weather-wise.
Frequently Asked Questions About Cebu
Is Cebu City safe for tourists?
Yes, in the main tourist and commercial areas. IT Park, Cebu Business Park, and the Ayala mall vicinity are as safe as any Southeast Asian city. The historic downtown around Colon Street is busier and more chaotic — use common sense, do not flash expensive items, and you will be fine. Standard urban travel precautions apply.
How many days do you need in Cebu?
Three days minimum to see the city properly and do one day trip. Five days gives you time for two or three day trips (Moalboal, Oslob, a Bohol overnight) plus two city days. If you are using Cebu purely as a transit hub to reach other islands, one night is enough — you can land, eat lechon, and catch an early ferry or flight the next morning.
Do Koreans need a visa to visit Cebu?
No. South Korean passport holders receive a free 30-day visa-free entry to the Philippines. Simply land, go through immigration, and you are in. This is a major reason Cebu is the top Philippine destination for Korean travelers after Boracay.
Is Cebu better than Boracay?
They serve different purposes. Cebu is a city with excellent day trip options and access to some of the best diving in Southeast Asia. Boracay is a beach resort island, simpler to visit, easier to relax in. If you want pure beach relaxation, Boracay wins. If you want variety, history, excellent food, and the flexibility to go in multiple directions, Cebu wins. Ideally you do both — they are 45 minutes apart by air.
What is the best way to get from Cebu to Bohol?
Fast ferry from Cebu Port to Tagbilaran, Bohol. Journey time 2 hours, tickets ₱500-600 one way. OceanJet and SuperCat run multiple departures daily starting from 6 AM. Book through their websites or at the port. Do not take the slow overnight ferry unless you enjoy spending 6 hours on a boat.
