Camiguin, Siargao or Mactan? What Our Booking Data Says About Small Islands

What the small sets do support is comparison of shape - what kinds of trips exist, how long they run, and what the cheapest and dearest options are. That is the question a traveller choosing between islands actually asks.

Camiguin: six trips, six categories, nothing expensive

Camiguin has the tightest range of any destination in our whole inventory: PHP 900 to PHP 1,800, with nothing above. And its six products span six distinct categories - nature, diving, water sports, island tour, island hopping and trekking.

That combination is unusual and useful. Katibawasan Falls with Ardent Hot Spring is PHP 900 for a half day; the Sunken Cemetery dive is PHP 1,000; Mantigue Island snorkelling PHP 1,200; the Mount Hibok-Hibok volcano trek PHP 1,800. Six completely different days, none of them expensive.

Hibok-Hibok is an active volcano monitored by PHIVOLCS, and trekking access depends on current alert level. That is worth checking before committing to it as your reason for going.

Siargao: the widest durations, the cheapest entry

Siargao's eight trips run from PHP 500 to PHP 2,500 and cover eight different durations - two hours, three, five, six-to-eight, eight, full day, two days, three days. No other destination we index is that varied across so few products.

The cheapest entry anywhere in this comparison is here: a coconut farm tour at PHP 500 for three hours. A Cloud 9 surf lesson is PHP 800 for two hours, tri-island hopping to Naked, Daku and Guyam is PHP 1,500, and the multi-day surf and yoga camps run PHP 1,800 to 2,500.

The structure tells you what Siargao is: an island where people stay for a week and dip into activities, not one where they book a packed day tour. Two of the eight products are multi-day camps, which no other small island in our data offers.

Mactan: nearly three times the median, and here is why

Mactan's median of PHP 3,500 looks alarming against PHP 1,200 for the other two, but the composition explains it. This is the island holding Cebu's international airport, lined with resorts, and its inventory reflects that: a hotel day-use pass at PHP 815, a sunset dinner cruise at PHP 3,500, beginner scuba at PHP 3,800, a private island-hopping tour at PHP 5,139.

These are resort products priced for people already staying in resorts. The genuinely comparable item - three-island hopping with lunch - is PHP 1,850, which sits right on the national standard rate and only a little above Siargao's PHP 1,500 equivalent.

So Mactan is not three times better. It is selling a different basket, weighted towards convenience and dining rather than island access.

Which island for which trip

Pick Camiguin if you want maximum variety per peso and do not mind a harder journey - volcano, waterfalls, hot and cold springs, a sunken cemetery dive and a snorkel island, all under PHP 1,800 each.

Pick Siargao if you are staying a week, want surf, and prefer short activities around unstructured days. It is the only one of the three with multi-day camps in our data.

Pick Mactan if you are transiting Cebu airport, have a night or two, and want a beach and a dinner cruise without a long transfer. Do not pick it expecting Camiguin's variety or Siargao's pace.

What thin inventory means in practice

Six products for Camiguin and eight for Siargao against 85 for Cebu is not a rounding difference - it is a different travel experience, and it has consequences worth planning around.

Fewer bookable products means fewer operators competing, which is why none of these islands shows the hard PHP 1,850 price cluster we measure everywhere else. Camiguin prices spread evenly from 900 to 1,800 with no repetition at all; Siargao repeats only PHP 1,500, and only twice. Where competition is thin, prices are set individually rather than converging on a market rate.

It also means more arranging on arrival. On Cebu or Boracay you can book a standard day tour the night before and be confident it runs. On these islands, and especially outside peak months, the practical approach is to reach the island first and organise through your accommodation - which is how most of the activity actually gets sold there regardless of what is listed online.

The upside is the reason people go: fewer operators generally means fewer boats at the same sandbar, and the difference between Mantigue or Guyam and a peak-season lagoon queue elsewhere is substantial.

What most guides get wrong about these three

They get grouped as interchangeable small islands, and the data says they are not remotely alike. One is volcanic and cheap, one is a surf-culture island with multi-day camps, one is an airport-adjacent resort strip. The only thing they share is being smaller than the destinations that dominate itineraries.

The second error is presenting Mactan as a beach destination equivalent to the others. Most of its beaches are resort-controlled, which is exactly why a day-use pass at PHP 815 exists as a product category here and nowhere else in our inventory.

Third, Camiguin and Siargao are both routinely described as unspoiled, which is doing less work than it appears. Our inventory holds six and eight products respectively against 85 for Cebu - that thinness is the actual finding, and it means fewer operators, less competition and more arranging things on arrival.
