How this guide was built
We read the durations and categories of all 38 bookable Bohol trips rather than their prices. Thirty-five are full day, one runs eight hours, one two hours and one spans two days.
The categories divide almost evenly between land and water - sightseeing and day tours 8, marine and snorkelling 8, general tours 6, island hopping 5, river cruises 4. No other destination we index is this balanced; El Nido and Coron are overwhelmingly boats, Cebu overwhelmingly land.
That balance is what makes Bohol a genuinely mixed destination, and also why the two halves cannot be folded into one day. Nothing in the inventory attempts it.
Why Panglao is the base, not Tagbilaran
Panglao is a separate island joined to Bohol by a bridge, and it is where the beaches, dive shops and most accommodation are. Our Panglao index holds 27 products, all boat days from Alona.
Tagbilaran is the port and administrative centre - practical for arriving, thin for staying. The countryside tours collect from both, so basing on Panglao costs you nothing on the inland day and gives you the beach on the others.
The countryside loop is one efficient day
The Chocolate Hills viewpoint, the tarsier sanctuary, the Loboc River cruise and the Bilar man-made forest sit within about ninety minutes of each other. That short internal distance is why our Bohol index has the lowest provincial median we measure at PHP 2,117, and why the headline pairing - hills and tarsiers - costs PHP 1,200 for eight hours.
Compare that with Cebu, where the equivalent southern day is four hours of driving each way. Bohol is the province where a day tour is mostly attraction and only a little transport.
Tarsiers, and choosing the right sanctuary
Tarsiers are nocturnal primates, extremely sensitive to stress, and the difference between a properly run sanctuary and a roadside enclosure is real rather than a matter of taste.
At a compliant site, flash photography and handling are prohibited, visitor numbers are managed and the animals are in a large enclosure rather than held for photographs. DENR wildlife-management guidance governs how protected species may be presented to visitors. Choosing on price alone is how travellers end up somewhere they would rather not have supported.
Balicasag has a cap, and it binds
The single most useful booking fact about Bohol. Balicasag is a marine sanctuary with a daily visitor cap and registered boats, introduced to stop the reef being overwhelmed.
In peak season the cheap shared trips - from PHP 1,383 including Virgin Island - fill first, and the cap is enforced rather than nominal. This is one of the few places in the country where booking a day or two ahead affects whether you get in at all, not just what you pay.
The Chocolate Hills are brown for part of the year
They are named for the colour they turn in the dry months, and that is when nearly every published photograph is taken. For much of the rest of the year they are green.
Neither is better, but arriving in a green month expecting the brown postcard is a common disappointment that no guide seems to warn about. The hills are grass-covered limestone mounds; the colour is a seasonal state, not a permanent feature.
Getting there, and why the ferry beats the day trip
Bohol is reached by fast ferry from Cebu City to Tagbilaran in about two hours, or by air into Panglao international airport. Both are straightforward; the mistake is using the ferry for a return day trip.

If Bohol is on your Visayas route at all, give it the three nights. The ferry then becomes transport between two destinations rather than an expensive round trip inside one day.
What the two-hour and eight-hour products tell you
Only three of 38 trips are not full-day: a two-hour firefly cruise on the Loboc River, an eight-hour countryside tour, and one two-day package.
The firefly cruise is the useful one. It runs after dark, which means it does not consume a daytime slot - it is the only Bohol product that can be added to a day you have already spent doing something else. If you want three attractions in three days plus something extra, that is where the extra fits.
What most guides get wrong about Bohol
The first error is selling Bohol as a Cebu day trip. Our index prices that at PHP 9,986 - roughly eight times the PHP 1,200 countryside tour done at leisure from a Panglao base - and it compresses a comfortable three-day province into a ferry-bound sprint.
The second is implying you can pair Alona Beach with the Chocolate Hills in an afternoon. Every Panglao product in our inventory is a full day, and the countryside loop is a separate inland day. Two halves, two days.
Third, guides treat the tarsier stop as interchangeable between operators. It is the one Bohol activity where which operator you choose has a welfare consequence.
