Ormoc is the commercial heart of western Leyte — a progressive port city known for its flower festival, its geothermal energy fields, and a mountain lake that most Philippine travellers have never heard of. Lake Danao, 16km from the city, sits inside a dormant volcano crater at 750 metres above sea level, ringed by cogon grasslands and secondary forest. Kayaking across its dark, glassy surface with cloud-covered mountains as a backdrop is a quiet, unhurried experience almost impossible to find in the more-visited parts of the Visayas. Ormoc also carries deep WWII history — the Ormoc Bay landing in December 1944 was a turning point in the Pacific campaign. The city rebuilt quickly and today its Sangyaw Festival (June 29) transforms the streets with flower floats made entirely from local blooms, a celebration unique in the Philippines for its craftsmanship and community investment.
Things to do in Ormoc
Kayak Lake Danao
The volcanic crater lake at 750m elevation offers kayak rentals (PHP 150–250/hour), a bamboo floating cottage, and some of the most peaceful scenery in Leyte. Arrive early for morning mist.
Visit Tongonan Geothermal Powerplant
One of the largest geothermal plants in the Philippines, Tongonan generates 700MW of clean energy from Leyte's volcanic activity. Guided tours of the viewing area are available — a fascinating industrial spectacle surrounded by jungle.
Sangyaw Flower Festival (June 29)
Ormoc's signature cultural event — street floats entirely covered in locally grown flowers, traditional dances, and a festive parade through the city center. Book accommodation weeks in advance.
Explore MacArthur Liberation Trail
Ormoc Bay was a key WWII liberation site. A monument marks where American forces landed in December 1944. The Ormoc City museum has photographs and documents from the battle and its aftermath.
Day trip to Punta Villa Beach
A 20-minute habal-habal ride brings you to a calm beach cove on the Camotes Sea — good snorkelling, coconut trees, and a handful of small guesthouses. Perfect contrast after mountain lake and city.

From Cebu City: fast ferry (SuperCat/Oceanjet) to Ormoc pier — 2.5 hours, PHP 700–1,000. From Tacloban: van PHP 250–350, 2 hours via Palompon road. From Manila: fly to Ormoc Airport (Cebu Pacific, SEAIR via Cebu) or fly to Tacloban and take a van. Lake Danao is 30 minutes from the city by habal-habal PHP 100–150.

Yes. Lake Danao alone is worth the trip from Cebu — it is the kind of quiet, volcanic lake you rarely get in the Visayas. Add the geothermal fields and local food scene and you have a full two-day itinerary easily.
How do I get from Ormoc to Tacloban?
Van or bus via the Leyte interior highway — 2 hours, PHP 200–300. The road passes through Palo, where the MacArthur leyte Landing Memorial is located.
Can I swim in Lake Danao?
Swimming is not officially promoted (the water is cool and deep), but kayaking and floating cottage use are the main activities. The lake is a watershed — no fishing or motorised boats.
