Naga City sits at the geographic and cultural heart of Bicol, straddling the Naga River in the lowlands of Camarines Sur. It is the region's commercial and academic hub, a city that does not feel like a tourist destination — and that is exactly the point. Come in September for the Peñafrancia Festival, the largest Marian devotion in Asia, or come any time of year for CamSur Watersports Complex, the premier cable wakeboarding park in Southeast Asia.

Witness the Peñafrancia fluvial procession
Every third Saturday of September, over one million devotees line the Naga River as the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is carried by a galleon from the Basilica back to the Peñafrancia Shrine. Arrive a day early and stake out a riverside spot before dawn.
Cable wakeboard at CamSur Watersports Complex
CWC is a full-size cable wakeboarding lake 10 minutes from the city centre. Beginners can ride the main cable for PHP 400 per hour with rental gear included; the park also has paddleboards, kayaks, and a kids' pool. It has hosted international wakeboarding championships.
Visit the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral
One of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the Philippines, built in 1575 and reconstructed multiple times, the cathedral anchors the Plaza Rizal and is central to the Peñafrancia Festival route. Worth a quiet visit any day of the year.
Eat your way through Bicolano cuisine
Naga is the best city in Bicol to try the full range of regional food: laing (dried taro leaves in coconut cream and chilli), Bicol Express, tinumok, and pinangat. The public market on Elias Angeles Street has canteen stalls serving generous meals for PHP 60–100. For pili nut sweets, check shops along Peñafrancia Avenue.
Trek Mount Isarog National Park
A dormant 1,966-metre stratovolcano 20 km from the city, covered in old-growth rainforest with endemic species found nowhere else in the world. The standard summit route is a 2-day trek; register at the DENR office in Naga beforehand and hire a required local guide (PHP 600–800/day).
Day trip to Bato Lake
A peaceful freshwater lake in the Camarines Sur interior, ideal for a half-day escape from the city. Take a jeepney from Naga to Bato town (1 hour, PHP 40) and hire a banca for a short lake crossing.

When exactly is the Peñafrancia Festival?
The festival runs for 9 days in September, ending on the third Saturday of the month with the fluvial procession. In 2026 that falls on September 19. The entire week prior has street dancing, novenas, and a separate Traslacion procession.
Do I need wakeboarding experience for CWC?
No. CWC has a dedicated beginner cable system and staff instructors on-site. Most first-timers are up and riding within 30–45 minutes. Gear rental (board, helmet, vest) is included in the hourly fee.
Is Naga safe during the Peñafrancia Festival with that many people?
The festival is well-organized with heavy police and barangay presence. Petty theft in crowds is the main risk — keep bags close and avoid displaying phones along the river procession route.
Can I do a day trip to Donsol from Naga?
Donsol is about 3.5–4 hours south by bus via Sorsogon City, making it a long day trip. Most travellers overnight in Legazpi (2 hours from Naga) and use Legazpi as the closer base for Donsol.
