Catbalogan is the capital of Western Samar — a city on a peninsula jutting into Maqueda Bay with a dramatic maritime location and a relatively undiscovered tourism scene. The city itself is compact and navigable, known for its traditional Samar canoes (the paraw) and its position as the gateway to the Sohoton Natural Bridge (the Samar version, distinct from the Surigao one) — a spectacular limestone arch over a deep river accessible only by outrigger boat through jungle mangroves. Western Samar also contains dozens of unexplored caves and the Gandara River cave diving system, attracting technical divers from around the world. Above ground, Lulugayan Falls in the interior is a 21-metre cascade with natural pools. WWII shaped this corner of Samar deeply — American forces landed across the province and the Battle for Leyte Gulf drew Samar into the Pacific's defining naval engagement.

Boat to Sohoton Natural Bridge
A guided river trip through jungle mangroves reaches the limestone arch spanning the Sohoton River — one of Samar's natural wonders. Combine with kayaking through the gorge and swimming in the river below the bridge.

Hike to Lulugayan Falls

The WWII-era buildings along the bayfront have been partially restored. The local market in the morning is excellent for dried fish, native sweets (bucarillo), and fresh seafood from Maqueda Bay.

Several small uninhabited islands in Maqueda Bay have white sand beaches and calm wading water. Bangka hire from the city pier PHP 800–1,500 for a half-day.

March–May for dry conditions and cave access. November–February has the northeast monsoon blowing across the coast but cave and river activities remain possible. June–October is typhoon season — Samar is frequently struck. The Sohoton river trip is best in dry season when water is calmer.

Is Catbalogan's Sohoton the same as the Surigao Sohoton?
No — they share a name but are separate places. The Western Samar Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park contains limestone arches over a river. The Surigao del Norte Sohoton (Bucas Grande) is a lagoon/cove system. Both are stunning; both are worth visiting.
How do I get from Catbalogan to the Eastern Samar coast?
A van or bus runs from Catbalogan to Calbayog (north) and on to Eastern Samar via Calbiga. The full journey to Borongan (Eastern Samar capital) takes 4–5 hours.
Is the cave diving suitable for recreational divers?
Cavern diving (within natural light of the cave entrance) requires open-water certification. Full cave diving is for technical divers only. Operators in Catbalogan cater to both; confirm your qualification level in advance.
