Bucas Grande is a large, forested island in the Surigao del Norte group, accessible from Siargao by speedboat and home to one of the Philippines' most otherworldly experiences: Sohoton Cove. Inside this hidden lagoon — accessible only at low tide through a low limestone arch — are towering cathedral caves, bioluminescent plankton that glow blue at night, and a lagoon where thousands of stingless jellyfish drift harmlessly around you as you swim. The jellyfish have no stingers (they evolved in an enclosed habitat with no predators), making swimming with them completely safe and dreamlike. Beyond Sohoton, Bucas Grande has pristine coves, white-sand islands, and extensive mangrove channels that see almost no tourist traffic outside of the Sohoton tour circuit. It is frequently combined with a Siargao visit as a day or overnight trip.

Swim with stingless jellyfish
The centrepiece experience — entering the hidden lagoon at low tide to float among thousands of jellyfish is completely safe and unlike anything else in the Philippines. No wetsuit, no gloves needed.
Cave kayak inside Sohoton
Kayaks are paddled through cathedral-ceiling limestone caves lit by torchlight and filtered daylight. The caves open into inner lagoons accessible only this way — a genuine natural wonder.
Night kayak for bioluminescence
On dark nights (new moon), the lagoon water glows blue-green with bioluminescent plankton. Overnight tours from Siargao specifically time departure for this — a magical add-on.
Snorkel pristine outer reefs
The outer edges of Bucas Grande have reefs visited by far fewer divers than Siargao's Daco Island circuit. Bumphead parrotfish, napoleon wrasse, and occasional thresher sharks reported.
Island-hop the Bucas Grande coves
Beyond Sohoton, the island has secluded coves with white sand and clear water. Private bangka tours can be extended to visit two or three beaches before returning to Siargao.

April–September for the best jellyfish density and calmest seas. October–March (northeast monsoon) can make the Siargao–Bucas Grande crossing rough. Sohoton Cove itself is sheltered once you're inside, but getting there in big swell is uncomfortable. The bioluminescent lagoon is best in the new moon phase (no ambient light).

From Siargao (General Luna or Dapa): speedboat to Bucas Grande — 1–1.5 hours. All Siargao resorts and tour operators run Sohoton Cove day tours (PHP 1,200–2,000/person). Private bangka hire PHP 3,000–6,000. From Surigao City (mainland): ferry to Socorro (Bucas Grande municipality) — 2.5–3 hours. The island has basic accommodation in Socorro town.

Yes — the Mastigias jellyfish in this enclosed lagoon evolved without stingers over thousands of years of isolation from predators. You can swim through them freely. Children, non-swimmers (with a life vest), and snorkellers all enjoy it safely.
What is the entrance fee for Sohoton Cove?
PHP 200–300 environmental fee per person, collected at the cove. This goes to the Socorro LGU for conservation. Life jackets are mandatory and provided.
Can I visit Bucas Grande without going through Siargao?
Yes — ferries run from Surigao City (mainland) to Socorro. But the Siargao package tours are the most convenient, and most travellers combine Bucas Grande with a Siargao surf trip.
