Brooke's Point is the southernmost major municipality of mainland Palawan — a town of 50,000 that looks south across the Sulu Sea toward Borneo, backed by the Palawan Biosphere Reserve and Mount Mantalingajan (2,085m, Palawan's highest peak). The journey from Puerto Princesa takes 4-5 hours by van along a road that grows progressively wilder and less developed as it approaches the town. The reward is an experience of genuine frontier Philippines: a town that still feels like the edge of the known world, with Mount Mantalingajan's biodiverse cloud forest rising immediately behind, Ursula Island Wildlife Sanctuary's seabird colonies offshore, and Mainit Hot Springs in a Batak indigenous community inland. Fewer than a hundred international tourists visit in a typical year.
Things to do in Brooke's Point
Trek Mt. Mantalingajan (2,085m)
Palawan's highest peak and the heart of the Palawan Biosphere Reserve — a 3-4 day trek through layered cloud forest ecosystems. DENR permit required (PHP 200/person). Guides are mandatory and sourced from the Batak community (PHP 1,500-2,000/day). The cloud forest contains dozens of Palawan endemic species — pitcher plants, extraordinary birds, and moss-draped giant trees.
Ursula Island Wildlife Sanctuary
A small island 30 minutes by banca from Brooke's Point pier — one of Palawan's most important seabird nesting sites. Thousands of terns, boobies, and frigatebirds nest here; the fringing reef is excellent for snorkelling. DENR permit required. Banca PHP 1,500-2,500 for the round trip.
Mainit Hot Springs and Batak community
Natural hot springs emerging near Lake Mainit in the Batak indigenous territory — accessible by habal-habal (1.5 hours from Brooke's Point). The Batak community runs simple ecotourism visits and sells traditional crafts. One of the rare opportunities to meet Palawan's most isolated indigenous group.

Brooke's Point faces west across the open Sulu Sea with no island obstructing the view toward Borneo. The town pier and waterfront area offer an extraordinary sunset: the sun descending into open ocean with the Mangsee Islands silhouetted on the horizon. Free, unrepeatable.
Philippine Cockatoo (Katala) birdwatching
The nearby Rasa Island (Narra) is the last stronghold of the critically endangered Philippine Cockatoo (around 250 individuals remain). The Katala Foundation Philippines (permit required, advance booking essential) organises birdwatching visits. The cockatoo is snow-white and unmistakable.

October through May for calmer Sulu Sea conditions and better trekking weather on Mantalingajan. The Batak community around Mainit Hot Springs is most accessible in the dry months. June through September brings rough weather and the Mantalingajan trail is extremely muddy.

Van from Puerto Princesa: 4-5 hours south on the National Highway, PHP 250-350 per seat (services depart 5am-3pm). Cebu Pacific has irregular scheduled flights from Puerto Princesa to Brooke's Point Airport (check current schedules). From Narra: 2-hour van south.

Very challenging — Class 4 difficulty. Dense forest, extremely muddy trails in the upper sections, river crossings, and nights at cold, wet camps. Suitable for physically fit, experienced trekkers. The 4-day minimum itinerary is genuinely demanding. Do not attempt without DENR-certified local guides.
Is Brooke's Point just a transit point for Balabac?
Many travellers treat it as a one-night stop on the way to Balabac. But a 2-3 night stay reveals the Mt. Mantalingajan experience, Ursula Island, and the genuinely frontier character of the town as worth staying for in their own right.
What are Sulu Sea security conditions?
The waters south and southwest of Brooke's Point approach the zone where maritime security incidents have occurred historically. Check current DFA/embassy advisories before any boat travel toward the Mangsee Islands or further south. The town and northern waters (Ursula Island) are safe.
