Batad is the most spectacular village in the Ifugao rice terrace country — a natural amphitheater of 2,000-year-old carved rice paddies cupping a cluster of traditional Ifugao houses at the bottom of a valley. Unlike Banaue, which you can see from the road, Batad requires a 45-minute trek through the terraces to reach, and that effort rewards you with a village largely unchanged for centuries. UNESCO inscribed the Ifugao Cordillera rice terraces as a World Heritage Site in 1995, calling them "a living cultural landscape." Batad is its crown jewel. Above the village, the trail continues to Tappiya Falls — a 30-metre cascade pouring into a swimming lagoon — making Batad a full-day adventure combining heritage, trekking, and nature. Staying overnight means you get the terraces glowing gold at sunrise with only the sound of water flowing through ancient stone channels.
Things to do in Batad

Wake at 5am and walk to the main viewpoint above the village to watch light pour over the semicircular terraces. The silence and the colours at this hour are unforgettable.
Trek to Tappiya Falls
A 45-minute hike from the village through the terraces leads to the 30-metre waterfall and its cool natural pool. Slippery at the edges — bring sandals you can swim in.
Walk the terrace walls
Narrow stone dikes 40–60cm wide connect the paddies. Locals walk them daily to tend their fields — you can do the same (go slowly, it's a balance challenge).
Meet Ifugao weavers
Village women weave traditional Ifugao textiles (hand-loomed patterns, natural dyes). Buy direct from the weaver — each piece is unique and takes days to make.

February–May for green paddies and clear skies (planting season fills the terraces with water). June–July is harvest gold. August–October has rain that turns paths muddy — possible but harder. December–January is cool and clear but the terraces look brown post-harvest.
✈️ How to get to Batad
From Banaue town: hire a jeepney to the Batad Junction (sometimes called Saddle Point) — 45 minutes, PHP 200–300 per jeepney. From the junction, walk 3–4km (45–60 min) through terraces down to the village. Alternatively, trek all the way from Banaue town (2.5–3 hours). From Manila: night bus to Banaue (FL Dimailig, Ohayami) — 8–9 hours overnight. One-way ticket PHP 500–700. Banaue is also reachable via Lagawe by van from Baguio (4–5 hours).
