Sugba Lagoon: Siargao

Destinations#siargao#lagoon#del-carmen#mangrove#2026

Sugba Lagoon is a sheltered body of turquoise water tucked inside the mangrove forests of Del Carmen municipality on Siargao Island. While most travelers come to Siargao for the surf at Cloud 9 or the island-hopping to Naked, Daku, and Guyam, Sugba Lagoon offers something quieter: a place to swim, paddle, and float in still water surrounded by dense mangrove trees. It is not a beach and it is not a waterfall. It is a lagoon, and that distinction matters.

This guide explains where Sugba Lagoon is, how to get there from General Luna, what the current 2026 fees are, what activities are available, and how to plan your day so you avoid the crowds that arrive between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

Understanding the Geography of Sugba Lagoon

Siargao is actually a cluster of islands, not a single landmass. Del Carmen occupies the western side of the main island and faces the Camotes Sea. The municipality contains one of the largest contiguous mangrove forests in the Philippines, covering more than 8,000 hectares. Sugba Lagoon sits within this mangrove system, reachable only by boat through narrow channels cut through the roots and branches.

The word "sugba" means "to grill" in the local Surigaonon language, and the lagoon got its name because locals traditionally used the area as a picnic and grilling spot. Today it is managed by the Del Carmen local government and community tourism groups who regulate boat traffic, collect environmental fees, and maintain the floating platforms.

How to Get to Sugba Lagoon

The jump-off point for Sugba Lagoon is the Del Carmen port, specifically at the barangay of Del Carmen proper. From General Luna, where most Siargao tourists stay, the drive to Del Carmen takes about 45 minutes to one hour by motorbike or van. The road is mostly paved as of 2026, though a few sections near the port are still gravel.

Getting to Del Carmen Port

If you have rented a motorbike in General Luna, you can ride to Del Carmen yourself. The route is straightforward: head north on the main road through the towns of Pacifico and Burgos, then follow signs to Del Carmen. Motorbike rental in Siargao costs PHP 300 to PHP 500 per day. If you prefer not to ride, you can hire a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) for about PHP 300 to PHP 400 one way, or a private van for PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,000 round trip.

At the Del Carmen port, you register at the tourism office, pay the environmental fee, and hire a boat. The boat ride to the lagoon takes about 20 to 30 minutes through the mangrove channels. The channels are narrow in places, and the boat operator navigates carefully around roots and fallen branches. Keep your hands inside the boat.

Sugba Lagoon Fees for 2026

The following fees were confirmed with the Del Carmen Tourism Office for the 2026 season.

If you book a packaged tour from General Luna, the typical all-in price is PHP 1,200 to PHP 1,800 per person including van transport, boat, entrance fees, and lunch. This is often the easier option if you do not want to arrange everything yourself.

What to Do at Sugba Lagoon

Swimming and the Jumping Platform

The main attraction is simply swimming in the calm, clear water. There is a two-story floating platform in the center of the lagoon with a jumping deck. The water depth at the platform is about 4 to 5 meters, so it is safe to jump but you should be a confident swimmer. Life vests are required and the platform staff will not let you jump without one.

Kayaking Through the Mangroves

Renting a kayak lets you paddle into the narrower mangrove channels that the motorized boats cannot reach. This is the best way to see the mangrove ecosystem up close. You will see crabs on the roots, small fish in the shallows, and if you are lucky, a saltwater crocodile. Yes, crocodiles live in the Del Carmen mangroves. They are wild and shy, and sightings are rare, but they are there. Do not swim in the outer channels, only in the designated lagoon area.

Paddleboarding

The lagoon water is so still that paddleboarding is easy even for beginners. The mangrove canopy blocks the wind, so you do not have to fight currents or gusts. Rentals are available at the floating platform.

Lunch on the Floating Cottage

There is a floating cottage adjacent to the platform where you can eat. If you book a packaged tour, lunch is usually grilled fish, pork, rice, and fruit, prepared by the boat crew. If you come independently, bring your own food. There is no store or restaurant at the lagoon.

Best Time to Visit Sugba Lagoon

Siargao has two distinct seasons. The dry season runs from March to October, with the calmest weather from April to May. The wet season, which also brings the best surf swells, runs from November to February. Sugba Lagoon is visitable year-round, but heavy rain can make the mangrove channels murky and less appealing for swimming.

The most important timing factor is the crowd. Tour boats from General Luna typically arrive between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. If you want the lagoon to yourself, aim to leave Del Carmen port by 7:00 AM. You will have the platform and the water largely to yourself until the first tour groups arrive around 9:30 or 10:00.

Where to Stay on Siargao

General Luna is the main tourist hub, with accommodations ranging from PHP 600 dorm beds to PHP 12,000 beachfront villas. Cloud 9 area has a cluster of surf-focused guesthouses. If you want to be closer to Del Carmen, there are a few homestays in the municipality itself, but options are limited and most visitors still prefer to base in General Luna for the restaurants and nightlife.

Responsible Tourism at Sugba Lagoon

The Del Carmen mangroves are a protected area under the jurisdiction of the local government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The mangroves serve as a fish nursery, a storm buffer for the island, and a carbon sink. When you visit, follow these guidelines:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sugba Lagoon safe for non-swimmers?

The lagoon water is calm and still, but it is deep at the jumping platform. Non-swimmers can enjoy the kayak and paddleboard activities with a life vest, and can wade in the shallower areas near the mangrove edge. Life vests are required for everyone entering the water.

Are there really crocodiles in the mangroves?

Yes, the Del Carmen mangrove forest is habitat for saltwater crocodiles. Sightings inside the designated lagoon swimming area are extremely rare because the area is busy with boat traffic and human activity. However, you should not swim in the outer channels or wander off alone in a kayak into remote mangrove areas.

Can I visit Sugba Lagoon on a day trip from General Luna?

Yes. The round trip including transport, boat ride, and 2 to 3 hours at the lagoon takes about 5 to 6 hours total. Most people leave General Luna around 7:30 AM and return by early afternoon.

Do I need to book a tour or can I go independently?

You can go independently by driving to Del Carmen port and hiring a boat directly. This is cheaper if you have a group of 4 to 6 people. If you are solo or a couple, joining a packaged tour from General Luna is usually more cost-effective because the boat cost is split among more people.

Is there food available at Sugba Lagoon?

There is no store or restaurant at the lagoon. If you book a packaged tour, lunch is typically included. If you go independently, bring your own food and water. The floating cottage has a grilling area you can use if you bring charcoal and raw ingredients.

What happens if it rains during my visit?

Light rain does not cancel trips to Sugba Lagoon; the mangrove canopy provides some shelter. Heavy rain or a typhoon warning will cancel boat trips for safety. Check with your tour operator the evening before if the weather looks uncertain.
