Ticao Island Manta Ray Snorkelling — Sorsogon
About this tour
While Donsol is famous for whale sharks, the nearby Ticao Island passage between Sorsogon and Masbate hosts one of the Philippines' most reliable oceanic manta ray cleaning stations. The Manta Bowl is a seamount where nutrient-rich upwelling currents create a plankton buffet that attracts oceanic mantas (wingspan 3-6 metres) year-round, with peak sightings from November to May. Snorkelling with manta rays in open water — watching these enormous, graceful animals spiral upward through the cleaning station as remora fish attend to their skin — is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters in all of Asia.
The full-day tour from Donsol (or Sorsogon City) involves a 1.5-hour banca crossing to Ticao Island. At the Manta Bowl, you enter the water quietly and float at the surface watching the mantas below you — they are generally undisturbed by calm snorkellers and will often approach out of curiosity. Diving directly down to the mantas is not permitted; surface snorkelling is the approved interaction method. Most trips get 2-4 manta encounters lasting 15-40 minutes each, with groups of 2-6 mantas at the cleaning station.
The tour also includes lunch at a Ticao Island village and a snorkel session on the island's coral reef, which has excellent coverage and hosts large schools of jacks, Napoleon wrasse, and sea turtles. The return crossing to Donsol completes a full day on the water that most travellers call the highlight of their Philippine trip.

About the area
Ticao Island sits in the San Bernardino Strait between Sorsogon and Masbate provinces. The Manta Bowl is a recognised marine sanctuary with a dive/snorkel permit system administered by the local barangay. The nutrient-rich San Bernardino Strait also makes the area a seasonal passage for whale sharks, hammerheads, and thresher sharks.
