Donsol Firefly Watching — Rizal River Night Tour
About this tour
After the whale sharks go to bed, Donsol reveals a second natural miracle: the firefly colonies of the Rizal River. After sunset, thousands of Pteroptyx tener fireflies emerge from the riverside mangroves and begin to synchronise their flashing — a phenomenon unique to Southeast Asian firefly species where entire tree canopies pulse with cold green-white light in unison, like a slow-motion strobe of living bioluminescence.
You drift silently along the river in a small wooden boat (no engine noise during the firefly zone — the operator poles or paddles to avoid disturbing the insects), and as your eyes adjust to the darkness, the mangrove trees ahead transform into softly glowing pillars of light. Each tree hosts hundreds of fireflies all flashing at exactly the same frequency — a biological synchronisation still not fully understood by scientists. The effect is simultaneously peaceful, magical, and profoundly beautiful.
The 2-hour night tour departs at 6:30 PM (or after sunset). Maximum 8 guests per boat. No torches or phone screens are used during the firefly zone — your guide will ask you to cover screens as even dim light disrupts the insects. This is the most other-worldly natural experience in Sorsogon, and pairs perfectly with a whale shark morning for the ultimate Donsol day.

About the area
The Rizal River mangroves in Donsol are a protected area managed by the local government with community warden patrols. The firefly colonies require specific mangrove species and water quality conditions to thrive; the Rizal River is one of only a handful of Philippine rivers with healthy synchronised firefly populations. The colony has been monitored since 2001 and remains stable.
