About this tour

Donsol, Sorsogon is recognised by the WWF as the world's best location for responsible whale shark interaction. The "butanding" (whale shark) gathers in Donsol Bay between November and June to feed on plankton blooms, with peak season from February to May when sighting rates exceed 90%. Unlike other whale shark destinations where the animals are fed or disturbed, Donsol's interaction protocol — developed with WWF and enforced by government-trained Butanding Interaction Officers (BIOs) — is the global gold standard for ethical wildlife tourism.

The interaction rules are strict and meaningful: no touching, maintain a 3-metre distance, no flash photography, and immediate disengagement if the whale shark shows any sign of stress. These rules exist because they work — Donsol's whale sharks return year after year, one of the highest whale shark visitation rates of any coastline in the world. You will experience the genuine presence of a 6-12 metre animal moving alongside you in open water, which is both humbling and one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on earth.

Your boat carries 6 guests maximum, with a BIO who spots whale sharks from the bow and signals when to enter the water quietly (no jumping). Most groups get 3-5 interactions per trip lasting 10-20 minutes each. Sightings are not guaranteed (as with all wildlife), but Donsol's track record during peak season is exceptional. Includes mandatory BIO fee, equipment, and the compulsory Donsol orientation at the Visitors Centre.

About the area

Donsol Bay in Sorsogon province is fed by nutrient-rich currents from the San Bernardino Strait, creating the plankton blooms that attract whale sharks. The bay's whale shark population was first formally documented by the WWF in the 1990s after local fishermen had known about the butanding for generations. Donsol was declared a WWF Whale Shark Ecotourism Site in 1998.

Frequently asked questions

Are whale shark sightings guaranteed?
Not guaranteed — these are wild, free-roaming animals. However, Donsol's peak season (Feb-May) sighting rate exceeds 90% per trip. Off-season (June-November) rates are lower.
Is touching the whale sharks allowed?
Absolutely not — touching is strictly prohibited and the BIO will end the interaction immediately if anyone attempts it. This rule exists to protect the whale sharks and ensure they keep returning.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You need to be able to swim 50 metres comfortably. You will be in open water up to 15 metres deep. Strong swimmers can keep pace with whale sharks more easily.
What is the season for whale shark interactions in Donsol?
November to June, with peak season February to May. The interaction season officially closes on June 30 each year when the whale sharks move on. No interactions outside the season.
