About this tour

When you're staying in Cebu City and want a proper beach and snorkel day without the 3-hour drive south, Mactan Island hopping is the answer. Mactan (where Cebu airport sits) is connected to Cebu City by bridge, and its eastern coast faces the Hilutungan Channel — a shallow protected strait with coral reefs and white-sand islets that make for excellent half-day island hopping just 30–40 minutes from your hotel lobby.

A traditional bamboo outrigger (banca) picks you up from the jetty and heads first to a coral garden for snorkeling — parrotfish, angelfish, clownfish in the anemones, and if you're lucky, a turtle resting on the reef. From there it's on to a sandbar for swimming and photos, then a white-sand beach islet for the included seafood lunch: grilled fish, squid, rice and fruit, the Visayan island-hopping standard that never disappoints.

The afternoon drifts back at the pace the banca sets — which is exactly right. This is the tour for the morning after a late arrival, the extra day before your flight home, or the traveller who wants to see the underwater world without committing to a full day in the van. It works perfectly, every time.

About the area

Mactan Island hosts Cebu's international airport and the resort belt of Punta Engano and Maribago — a 5–10 km strip of mid-range and luxury beach resorts. The dive and snorkel sites in the Hilutungan Channel offer reasonable coral coverage and good marine life, though the reefs have recovered from years of blast fishing with the help of local conservation groups.

Mactan is also where Lapu-Lapu killed Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 — a small shrine marks the spot at Mactan Shrine Park, easily added as a 20-minute stop before or after the boat trip. See our Cebu guide for Mactan resort recommendations and dive operator listings.

Frequently asked questions

Is the snorkeling in Mactan good?
The reefs are decent for a half-day trip close to the city — expect good fish life and some coral, with occasional turtle sightings. For exceptional reefs, head to Moalboal or Malapascua; Mactan is best appreciated as a convenient, enjoyable option rather than a world-class dive destination.
What is included in the seafood lunch?
Grilled fish (typically lapu-lapu or bangus), squid, rice, fresh fruit and drinking water. Vegetarian alternatives can be requested in advance.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes — private banca charters are available for couples or families. Private tours can customise the stops and timing. Inquire at booking.
