About this tour

Camotes Island is the kind of place that makes you wonder why everyone isn't talking about it. Located off Cebu's east coast, this compact island has a freshwater lake (Lake Danao) with kayaking, bamboo resorts and a breezy lakeside vibe that feels more like a Thai national park than a Philippine beach town. It also has the extraordinary Timubo Cave — a limestone grotto you descend into by ladder, leading to a subterranean pool where you can swim surrounded by stalactites in cool, crystal-clear freshwater.

The day trip starts with a fast boat from Cebu's Danao port (just an hour north of the city), arriving at San Francisco port on Camotes by mid-morning. Your guide leads you first to Timubo Cave for a surreal cave swim, then to Santiago Bay Garden and Resort for lunch on its white-sand beach. Afternoon options include exploring Lake Danao on a kayak, visiting the Spanish-era church at San Francisco town, or simply napping in a hammock — Camotes runs on island time.

The return boat gets you back to Cebu City by early evening. Camotes sees a fraction of the visitors that Bantayan or Malapascua attracts, meaning you'll have the cave and the lake largely to yourself — a rarity in the Visayas these days.

About the area

Camotes Islands is a group of four islands (Pacijan, Poro, Tulang and Tulang Diyot) in the Camotes Sea between Cebu and Leyte. The main hub for tourists is the municipality of San Francisco on Pacijan. The island has a growing but still small-scale tourism scene — infrastructure is basic but charming.

Fast boats depart from Danao City port, roughly 1 hour north of Cebu City by taxi or bus. See our Cebu guide for detailed transport information and independent traveller tips for Camotes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Timubo Cave safe to swim in?
Yes — the cave pool is calm freshwater, around 3–5 m deep in the swimming area. Life vests are available. You descend by a fixed ladder (about 5 metres). Moderate fitness is needed; it's not suitable for those afraid of confined spaces.
How do we get to Camotes?
Fast boats depart from Danao City port (1 hour north of Cebu City) several times per day. The crossing takes about 1–1.5 hours. The tour guide handles all tickets and logistics.
Is Camotes suitable for a family trip?
Yes — Lake Danao and the beach are great for families. Timubo Cave requires climbing a ladder and swimming, so young children (under 6) may find it challenging, but the rest of the day is family-friendly.
