Baler Surfing Lessons — Sabang Beach, Aurora
About this tour
Baler is where Philippine surfing began — literally. In 1979, Francis Ford Coppola filmed the Apocalypse Now surfing scene on Sabang Beach, accidentally introducing the sport to the Philippines when the crew left surfboards behind. Local fishermen picked them up, and a surf culture was born that now draws wave riders from across Asia to this quiet bay on the Pacific coast of Aurora province.
Sabang Beach delivers what most Philippine beaches cannot: a reliable shore break with waves that wrap around the headland and peel across the bay in long, forgiving rides ideal for learning. The beach-break produces waves in the 1-2 metre range during the October-March northeast monsoon season, with occasional overhead sets when typhoon swells push through. The sandy bottom makes for gentle wipeouts and quick remounts.
Your BSSI-certified instructor begins on the beach with the fundamentals: paddling position, pop-up technique, weight distribution, and reading wave sets. The first water session focuses on the whitewash — catching broken waves on a longboard to build confidence and feel for the board. By the third session most beginners are catching unbroken waves and riding to the sand with genuine momentum. The instructors at Sabang have been teaching since the 1990s and their patience with beginners is exceptional. After your lesson, rent a board for the afternoon and keep practising — daily rentals are very affordable.
