About this tour

Aurora province hides some of Luzon's most spectacular waterfalls deep in the Sierra Madre mountains, and this full-day circuit covers three very different natural highlights — a sacred tree, a panoramic hilltop, and the province's most awe-inspiring cascade — all within striking distance of Baler.

The circuit begins at the Balete Tree in Baler town — an ancient specimen of the strangler fig family estimated to be several hundred years old. Its massive aerial roots have fused into a cathedral-like structure with a natural pool at the base. Local legend holds the tree to be sacred, home to ancestral spirits, and indeed the place has an unmistakable atmosphere of age and stillness. Swimming in the cold clear pool while the root walls tower overhead is an unexpected joy.

Ermita Hill offers the best aerial perspective on Baler: the horseshoe bay, the surf lines on Sabang Beach, and on clear days the entire arc of Aurora's Pacific coast from Dingalan in the south to Casiguran in the north. The hill is named for a small hermitage chapel near the summit, built by Spanish missionaries in the 18th century.

The centrepiece is Ditumabo "Mother Falls" — Aurora's tallest waterfall, a multi-tiered cascade totalling 200 metres of drop through old-growth forest in San Luis municipality. The trail requires wading the Ditumabo River multiple times through knee-to-waist-deep crossings, making this a genuine adventure rather than a tourist stroll. The reward is a powerful main falls that sends mist 50 metres outward, creating permanent rainbows in the spray. The emerald plunge pool is cold, deep, and perfect for swimming after the 90-minute approach walk.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is the Ditumabo trek?
The trail to Ditumabo Falls requires wading through rivers 8-10 times (knee to waist depth, depending on rain). It is 2-3 hours round-trip with moderate fitness required. Sturdy sandals or water shoes are essential.
Is the Balete tree safe to swim in?
Yes — the pool inside the Balete tree's hollow root system is a natural freshwater pool about 1 metre deep. It is cold, clear, and a favourite local cooling spot.
When is the trail open?
The trail is open year-round but best from October to June. Heavy rains in July-September can make river crossings dangerous and the DENR may close the trail.
