Vigan
The Philippines' most intact colonial city — cobblestones and empanada · Ilocos Sur

Vigan is the best-preserved Spanish colonial city in Asia — a living UNESCO World Heritage town where 16th-century stone mansions line cobblestone streets unchanged for four centuries. Located in Ilocos Sur on the northwest Luzon coast, it is compact enough to cover on foot or by kalesa in a day, but rewarding enough to deserve two. The food alone justifies the trip north.
Things to do in Vigan
Calle Crisologo at dawn
Set your alarm for 5:30 AM. The cobblestone street lined with 16th-century ancestral mansions is completely empty at first light — you'll have it to yourself before tour groups arrive by 8 AM.
Kalesa ride through the heritage zone
The horse-drawn carriage is not just a tourist gimmick — it is how Vigan moves. A 30-minute circuit costs PHP 150–200 and covers the main plazas and back streets behind Crisologo.
Vigan Empanada at Heritage Village Plaza
The local fast food — a flaky, deep-fried rice-flour pastry stuffed with Ilocos longganisa, egg, and green papaya. One piece costs PHP 25–35. Eat it standing at the fryer stall while it is still crackling hot.
Syquia Mansion
The ancestral home of President Elpidio Quirino is open as a museum (PHP 50 entry). Walk through the preserved sala, dining room, and bedroom of a 1920s ilustrado family — unexpectedly moving.
Burnay pottery and Abel Iloco weave
Both are living crafts. Watch potters work burnay clay at the kilns on the Pagburnayan road, then shop Abel Iloco hand-woven textiles — the geometric-pattern blankets and shawls are the best souvenir you can buy (PHP 300–800).
Plaza Salcedo dancing fountain
Every evening at 7 PM, the fountain in front of the Vigan Cathedral runs a music-and-light show. It sounds corny and it is genuinely delightful. The whole town turns up.

🗓️ Best time to visit Vigan
November to May is dry and comfortable. June to October brings occasional rain but fewer tourists — the streets of Calle Crisologo are atmospheric in light rain. Avoid Holy Week (March/April) when accommodation fills weeks ahead.

Frequently asked questions — Vigan
How far is Vigan from Manila and how long is the trip?
Vigan is about 400 km north of Manila. The overnight bus takes 8–10 hours (PHP 700–900 on Partas or Philippine Rabbit from Pasay/Cubao). Flying to Laoag then busing down cuts total travel to 3–4 hours, but costs more.
What are the must-buy pasalubong from Vigan?
Ilocos bagnet (twice-fried pork belly chips, vacuum-packed for travel), Abel Iloco woven textiles, Vigan longganisa (the garlic sausage — buy it vacuum-sealed), and pinakbet seasoning mix. All available along Crisologo and in the public market.
Is one day enough for Vigan?
One full day covers the highlights if you start at dawn on Calle Crisologo and finish at the Plaza Salcedo fountain. Two nights is ideal — it lets you explore the surrounding Ilocos countryside (Paoay Church, Pagudpud Beach) without rushing.
Where should I eat in Vigan beyond empanada?
Cafe Leona on Plaza Salcedo does reliable Ilocano standards (pinakbet, dinengdeng, bagnet) in a pleasant heritage setting for PHP 200–400/head. Cafe Uno is the backpacker standard for all-day breakfast and decent coffee.

First time in Vigan?
Quick essentials so you can hit the ground running.
Same Philippine visa-free entry as the rest of the country — most nationalities get 30 days on arrival.
Bring PHP cash from Manila — ATMs in Vigan are limited and often empty on weekends; BDO on Crisologo is the most reliable.
Water from taps and market stalls is not for drinking; stick to bottled water (available everywhere at PHP 20–30).
Cash is king in Vigan — most empanada stalls, kalesa drivers, and market vendors do not accept cards.
Vigan is one of the safest destinations in the Philippines; the heritage zone is quiet, well-lit, and actively maintained — relax and wander freely.
