Tanay
Rizal's adventure capital — waterfalls, mountain lakes, and Manila's weekend escape · Luzon

Tanay is the adventure hub of Rizal Province — a 2-hour drive from Manila that opens into a world of cascading waterfalls, forested mountains, and Sierra Madre hiking trails. Daranak Falls is the most famous: a wide, tiered cascade with a natural pool perfect for swimming, set in a park managed by the municipal government. Just 15 minutes further, Batlag Falls is narrower, less crowded, and feeds into a river ideal for bamboo rafting. The town also serves as the trailhead for the Masungi Georeserve, where a remarkable network of trail ropes and platforms weaves through limestone karst — one of the Philippines' most visually striking eco-tourism experiences. Tanay sits between Metro Manila and the Sierra Madre mountain range, making it the perfect pressure valve for urban stress: the air quality alone, compared to the capital, can feel like a different country.
Things to do in Tanay
Swim at Daranak Falls
The main event — a wide, multi-level waterfall with a deep natural pool and sandy riverbank. Entrance PHP 50–80. Rope swings and bamboo platforms make it perfect for a half-day soak.
Hike the Masungi Georeserve

Kayak the Daranak River
Kayaks and bamboo rafts are available at the falls park for PHP 100–200 per hour. The river winds through forested banks with occasional rapids downstream.

Multiple campsites in the Tanay mountains run by local communities. Botocan Falls campsite allows overnight stays — wake up to mountain mist and birdsong before Manila wakes.
Rappel down a canyon
Several adventure outfitters in Tanay (including those at Caleruega area) run canyoneering and rappelling tours — 20-metre drops into canyon pools. Great for first-timers, guides provided.
