Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park is one of the most extraordinary natural landscapes in the Philippines and one of the least visited given what it contains. Hidden inside the limestone karst hills above the Sohoton River in Samar province, it holds an interconnected system of underground rivers, cathedral-scale caves, massive natural rock bridges spanning river gorges, tidal lagoons that turn bioluminescent blue at night, and river channels so enclosed by overhanging rock and mangrove that the passage through them feels like entering another dimension. The experience does not resemble anything else in the Philippine islands, and it belongs on any serious list of natural wonders in Southeast Asia.
Things to do in Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park
The Cave Banca Passage
The defining experience of Sohoton and one of the most remarkable things you can do in the Philippines. Your motorized banca navigates up the Sohoton River, which gradually narrows as limestone cliffs rise on both sides, until the river disappears into a low cave opening. The banca enters the cave — you and your guide duck, the engine cuts to a low idle, and the cave walls close around you, your headlamps illuminating the ceiling mere metres above. Bats roost overhead. The rock formations are extraordinary: stalactites, curtains of flowstone, formations that look like melted wax frozen mid-drip. The tour packages (PHP 800–1,200 per person including banca, guide, helmet, and lighting) cover this passage as standard.
The Sohoton Natural Bridge
The natural limestone bridge that gives the park its name is a massive rock arch spanning a gorge in the interior of the park — formed over millennia by the same river that still flows beneath it. The bridge is wide enough to walk across; standing on top of it you look down into the deep gorge and the river below. The arch is perhaps 20 metres above the river surface and spans 20–30 metres. The approach involves a short climb from the banca landing (sometimes with ropes or bamboo rungs depending on water level); wear closed-toe shoes with grip. This is included in the standard tour.
Panhugyaw Cave Bioluminescent Lagoon (Evening Tour)
Panhugyaw Cave contains a small interior lagoon where bioluminescent plankton concentrates in remarkable density. At night, when the cave is dark and your guide stirs the water with a paddle, the lagoon erupts in cold blue-white light. The effect is otherworldly in the true sense: it looks less like biology and more like something from a film set, except that you are underground inside a cave on a small motorized banca in Samar and the light is completely real. Evening tours are arranged separately from the standard daytime package; cost is approximately PHP 1,500 per person. Book when you arrive at Basey in the morning — evening boats are limited and fill quickly in peak season.
Hiking the Sohoton Interior
Beyond the cave passages and the natural bridge, the park has marked trails into the interior forest. The terrain is karst limestone — sharp, uneven underfoot, with sinkholes and sudden drops — so a guide is mandatory (included in all tour packages, and the guides know which sections to avoid). The forest inside the park is old-growth secondary rainforest with dense canopy, and the bird life (hornbills, kingfishers, sunbirds) is exceptional by Philippine standards. The full trail loop takes 2–3 hours at moderate pace and is included in the day tour price.
River Channel Boat Ride Through Mangroves
The journey to Sohoton from Basey passes through several kilometres of mangrove-lined river channels, some so narrow that mangrove branches touch the hull of the banca on both sides. Monitor lizards in the roots, kingfishers darting over the water, crab-eating macaques in the mangrove canopy. Ask your guide to slow down through the narrowest sections. Early morning tours (departing Basey by 7–8 AM) offer the best wildlife sightings before the heat drives animals into shade.
Booking Through Basey Tourism Office
Do not book Sohoton tours through third-party Tacloban agents unless they have an established relationship with the Basey operators — margins are high and service quality is inconsistent. Go directly to the Basey Municipal Tourism Office at the riverside (open daily by 7 AM). They assign accredited guides, manage the banca scheduling, and collect the official fees. The total for a standard day tour (banca, guide, helmet, lighting, cave entrance) should not exceed PHP 1,200 per person for groups of 4+. Negotiate politely but do not undercut the guides' livelihood; these are small community operators.

🗓️ Best time to visit Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park
November through June offers the most reliable access. The river levels are more navigable in the dry season (February through May), and lower water makes the cave passages easier to transit. The monsoon months of July through October bring heavy rain that can raise river levels significantly — the tidal cave passages may become impassable and tours are cancelled. Bioluminescent plankton is present year-round but is most visible on moonless nights; plan an evening tour for new moon periods.
✈️ How to get to Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park
The access town is Basey, in Samar, 20 km from Tacloban City via the San Juanico Bridge. From Tacloban: take a multicab or jeepney from the San Juanico Bridge approach toward Basey (PHP 30–40 per person, 30–40 minutes) or hire a private tricycle (PHP 150–200 one-way, PHP 400–500 return with waiting time). The Basey tourism office and banca operators are at the Basey riverside port — arrive early, ideally by 8 AM, to secure a boat and guide. Tacloban Airport (TAC) is the nearest air hub: served daily from Manila and Cebu. Most visitors base themselves overnight in Tacloban and do Sohoton as a full-day excursion.

Frequently asked questions — Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park
Can I visit Sohoton without an overnight stay in Tacloban?
Yes, but it is a long day. If you fly into Tacloban on a morning flight and go directly to Basey (40-minute tricycle ride), you can complete a full Sohoton day tour and return to Tacloban in the evening. The morning flight from Manila typically arrives around 8–9 AM; you can reach Basey by 9:30–10 AM and complete the tour by 3–4 PM. The evening bioluminescent tour is not compatible with a same-day departure schedule.
Is Sohoton suitable for non-swimmers?
Yes. The banca tour does not require swimming. The cave passage is done on the boat, and the interior lagoon visits are also conducted from the banca. The trail to the natural bridge involves walking, not swimming. Non-swimmers should inform their guide so the boat remains stable during the cave passage.
How physically demanding is the Sohoton tour?
Moderate. The cave passage requires ducking inside the banca and is not suitable for those with severe claustrophobia. The trail to the natural bridge involves uneven limestone terrain and some climbing (ropes and bamboo assists provided). The full-day tour involves 4–6 hours of activity; anyone with reasonable mobility can complete it.
What should I bring for the Sohoton day tour?
Closed-toe shoes with grip (essential — sandals are dangerous on wet limestone), a change of clothes (you will get wet in the cave), headlamp or torch (helmet with lamp is provided but your own is better), drinking water (at least 2 litres), insect repellent, and cash for the tour fee and transport. A waterproof phone pouch or dry bag is strongly recommended.

First time in Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park?
Quick essentials so you can hit the ground running.
Citizens of most countries receive a free 30-day visa on arrival in the Philippines. Carry proof of onward travel and a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date.
Philippine peso (PHP) only. Withdraw cash at BDO or BPI ATMs in Tacloban City before travelling to Basey — there are no reliable ATMs in Basey. Bring PHP 2,000–2,500 per person for a standard day tour.
Wear insect repellent in the mangrove and cave sections. The cave interiors are cool and damp; a light layer helps after sweating through the trail. Bat guano is present in the caves — do not touch your face without washing hands first. Travel insurance including medical evacuation is strongly recommended for adventure activities.
Budget PHP 1,800–2,500 per person for a full Sohoton day trip including transport from Tacloban, tour package, guide, entrance, and return transport. The evening bioluminescent tour adds PHP 1,500. Budget travelers can reduce costs by sharing a banca with other tourists met at the Basey tourism office.
The cave passage is the one section that requires clear communication with your guide. Inform the guide if you are claustrophobic, if you have back or neck issues (ducking is required), or if you are uncertain about the conditions ahead. Flash floods after heavy rain can raise river levels rapidly; the Basey tourism office monitors conditions and cancels tours when levels are unsafe. Do not attempt to visit independently without an accredited guide.
