San Jose is the capital of Occidental Mindoro and the jumping-off point for Apo Reef Natural Park — a UNESCO-nominated marine protected area often called the best dive wall in the Philippines and one of the best in Asia. The reef is a 30km-long coral plateau that drops vertically into the deep ocean, home to schooling barracuda, white-tip reef sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and an almost incomprehensible density of marine life. San Jose itself is an unpretentious city with good eating, several manageable city beaches, and ready access to the interior highlands where the indigenous Mangyan people maintain traditions largely untouched by lowland culture. Ilin Island, reachable in 45 minutes by boat, has pristine white sand beaches and coral almost no one visits. San Jose rewards the traveller willing to organise their own trip rather than wait for a package tour.

Dive or snorkel Apo Reef
The world-class Apo Reef requires a boat from Sablayan (2–3 hours north of San Jose). Two-day liveaboard or Sablayan-based day trips available. The drop-off wall, shark sightings, and turtle density are unmatched in the Philippines.
Beach-hop Ilin Island
A 45-minute bangka from San Jose pier reaches this largely undeveloped island with white sand beaches, clear shallow water, and a small community. Bring your own picnic — facilities are minimal.
Meet the Mangyan people
The indigenous Mangyan of Mindoro maintain traditional culture — script, weaving, and highland agriculture. Several community-tourism programs operate from San Jose; visits involve a registered guide who works directly with the community.
Explore Ambulong Island
Just off the San Jose coast, Ambulong is a small, forested island with good snorkelling, a lighthouse, and a serene pace. Day-trip boats available from the pier for PHP 800–1,500.

March–June is ideal — dry season, calm seas, and best dive visibility at Apo Reef (20–40m). November–February can have northeast monsoon swell on the Mindoro Strait. July–October has typhoon risk and rougher passages to the reef. The city itself is manageable year-round.
✈️ How to get to San Jose, Mindoro
From Manila (Domestic Airport): fly Cebu Pacific or AirAsia to San Jose Airport — 1 hour. Flights daily. Alternatively, Manila → Batangas Port by bus (3 hours) → RORO ferry to San Jose → van to city (8–10 hours total, PHP 800–1,200). The Batangas-San Jose ferry operates daily. From Puerto Princesa: San Jose is reachable by boat via the island-hopping route, but most travellers fly.

Is Apo Reef suitable for non-divers?
The reef's shallower sections are excellent for snorkelling. Liveaboard operators welcome snorkellers. However, the best marine life (sharks, mantas, barracuda schools) is in deeper water — learning to dive opens the full experience.
How far is Apo Reef from San Jose?
Apo Reef is about 30km off the Mindoro coast. From San Jose city, most divers travel to Sablayan (2.5 hours north by bus) and then take a 2–3 hour boat to the reef. Some operators offer direct trips from San Jose.
Is San Jose Mindoro safe?
Yes. San Jose is one of the more organised cities in Occidental Mindoro. Standard urban precautions apply. Apo Reef is a marine reserve with active ranger presence. The Mangyan highlands require a guide — not for safety, but for respectful, culturally-informed access.
