Mount Kanlaon is the highest peak in the Visayas at 2,435 metres and one of the Philippines' most active volcanoes — it has erupted over 30 times since the 19th century, most recently in 2024. The danger is also the draw: Kanlaon's active crater is a dramatic place, surrounded by a cloud forest that contains some of the highest biodiversity in the Visayas, including dozens of endemic bird species (the Negros Bleeding-Heart Pigeon and the Visayan Warty Pig are found in these forests), rare orchids, and pitcher plants adapted to the volcanic soil. Three established trails — from Canlaon City, from Guintubdan (La Castellana), and from Mambukal (Murcia) — require different permits and varying levels of difficulty. Mambukal Mountain Resort, at the Murcia trailhead, is also a destination in itself: a resort built around natural hot spring pools and cold-water pools, with jungle ziplines and short hiking trails accessible without climbing the full volcano.

Things to do in Mt. Kanlaon

Soak in Mambukal hot springs

Seven natural spring pools of varying temperatures (from nearly boiling to comfortable bathing) set in tropical jungle. Day visitors pay PHP 100–150 entrance. Cottages and resorts available for overnight stays. The lower pools are excellent; the hike to the upper pools passes through dense bamboo forest.

Trek to the Kanlaon summit

The full Mambukal trail to the crater summit takes 2 days (camp at 1,600m). DENR permit required (PHP 1,000). Guides are mandatory. The cloud forest above 1,200m is extraordinary — mossy, quiet, and rich with bird life. Check Phivolcs alert before booking.

Birdwatch the Kanlaon cloud forest

Kanlaon Natural Park protects one of the most biodiverse cloud forests in the Visayas. The Negros Bleeding-Heart, Visayan Flowerpecker, and various hornbill species are resident. Licensed birdwatching guides based in Mambukal can arrange dawn forest walks.

Zipline over the Mambukal valley

A jungle zipline over the forested resort valley — not the longest in the Philippines but the setting is genuinely beautiful: you're flying over old-growth jungle with volcanic peaks above you. PHP 200–300.

Volcano viewing from Canlaon City

The eastern slope approach from Canlaon City gives a different profile of Kanlaon — the perfect cone rising above sugarcane fields. Even without trekking, the approach road offers dramatic volcano-over-lowland views.

Only when Phivolcs rates it at Alert Level 0 (normal) or Level 1 (low-level unrest). At Level 2 or above, all trekking is suspended by DENR. The volcano erupted explosively in 2024 — always verify current status at phivolcs.dost.gov.ph before any booking. Mambukal resort and its lower trails are accessible at Level 1.

Do I need a permit to climb Mt. Kanlaon?

Yes — a DENR-PENR permit is required (PHP 1,000/person), and a licensed local guide is mandatory. Permits are arranged through the Kanlaon Natural Park office in Canlaon City or through Mambukal resort contacts. Processing takes 1–2 weeks.

Is Mambukal resort good even without the volcano trek?
