Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Davao Oriental, Mindanao — inscribed in 2014 for extraordinary biodiversity and exceptional endemism. The mountain stacks five distinct ecosystems between 75 and 1,637 metres elevation, culminating in the "pygmy forest": a summit plateau of naturally dwarfed trees growing only 1-2 metres tall in poor, aluminium-toxic volcanic soil. The effect is surreal — standing in a dense mature forest where every tree is waist-height, and the canopy is at eye level. The sanctuary contains 11 endemic orchid species, the critically endangered Philippine Eagle (one of its last Mindanao strongholds), the Visayan Warty Pig, and a dragonfly found nowhere on Earth except this mountain. The gateway is Mati City, capital of Davao Oriental and itself a surf destination on the Pacific coast.
Things to do in Mt. Hamiguitan
Trek to the Hamiguitan pygmy forest
The signature experience — a 2-day/1-night trek through the sanctuary's layered ecosystems to the summit plateau pygmy forest. The transition from lowland forest to cloud forest to the eerie dwarf-tree plateau is extraordinary. DENR permit required (PHP 200). Mandatory guide PHP 1,500/day (Davao Oriental guide association).
Birdwatch for Philippine Eagle
Hamiguitan is one of the last refugia for the Philippine Eagle in Mindanao. Licensed birdwatching guides with spotting scopes operate dawn sessions from the lower trail and forest clearings. The Mindanao Racquet-tail and other endemics are regularly seen on the lower trail.
Lower trail orchid survey hike
The lower trail to approximately 800m is accessible as a day hike without the full summit permit — passing through lowland and lower montane forest where several of Hamiguitan's 11 endemic orchid species can be spotted. Guide PHP 800-1,000/day; arrange through the DENR park office in Mati.
Surf Dahican Beach (Mati)
Mati City's Dahican Beach faces the Pacific with consistent swell — a wide, accessible break popular with Mindanao surfers October through April. Surfboard rental PHP 300-500/day. Lessons available from local surf instructors. The beach is wide and uncrowded by Philippines standards.
Observe fruit bats at Mati (dusk)
The forested areas around Mati and Dahican have roosting fruit bat colonies that emerge at dusk in dramatic streaming columns. A spectacular and free natural phenomenon — ask at your accommodation for the nearest current roost location.

Frequently asked questions — Mt. Hamiguitan
How hard is the full Hamiguitan summit trek?
Very challenging. The upper trail involves steep, extremely muddy sections through mossy montane forest. The final push to the pygmy forest requires scrambling through dense vegetation. A 2-day minimum (overnight at forest camp) is standard. Requires good fitness and mental resilience — the forest is relentless but extraordinary.
Can I visit Hamiguitan without the full trek?
Yes — the DENR park office offers guided lower-trail half-day hikes to 800m (no summit). You won't see the pygmy forest, but the lower montane zone is UNESCO-protected and spectacular for birds and orchids. This is a good option for most visitors.
How do I get the DENR permit?
At the DENR-CENRO office in Mati City — process on arrival day, trek the next morning. Bring 2 passport photos and your passport/ID. Guide registration is done simultaneously. PHP 200 permit fee + guide daily rate negotiated directly.
