Matnog is the southernmost town of Luzon — the point where the island of Luzon ends and the ferry crossing to Samar and Visayas begins. Most travellers know it only as the RORO ferry terminal where the long-haul bus from Manila deposits you before the crossing to Allen, Northern Samar. What most miss, by going directly to the ferry, is that Matnog has its own destination: a cluster of small islands in Matnog Bay with a pink sand beach (Calintaan Island), a saltwater lagoon (Juag Lagoon), a sea turtle sanctuary (Tikling Island), and a generally exceptional island-hopping circuit that rivals the neighbouring Donsol in terms of natural interest. The pink sand at Calintaan — coloured by the same Foraminifera mechanism as Zamboanga's Great Santa Cruz Island — is the most accessible pink sand beach in Luzon.
Things to do in Matnog
Calintaan Island Pink Sand Beach
Calintaan Island (also called Pinisaan) is the pink sand centrepiece of the Matnog island circuit — a small island with a pink-tinged beach beach caused by crushed Foraminifera shells mixed into the coral sand. The pink is subtle rather than vivid (look most clearly in direct sunlight on dry sand), but the island is genuinely beautiful: clear turquoise water, calm swimming area, and basic amenities provided by the barangay (covered huts, a small fee of PHP 50). Day-hopping tours from Matnog Port include Calintaan as the standard first stop.
Juag Lagoon
The Juag Lagoon (also called the Juag Fish Sanctuary Lagoon) is an enclosed saltwater lagoon connected to the sea through a narrow mangrove channel. The lagoon is calm, turquoise, and suitable for snorkeling — fish density is high because the area has been a community-managed fish sanctuary for over a decade. The lagoon water is warm and the coral rubble edges support an unusually productive macro fauna. Entry to the sanctuary PHP 50; banca transfer included in island-hopping tour rates.
Tikling Island Sea Turtle Sanctuary
Tikling Island is a sea turtle nesting sanctuary maintained by the Matnog municipal government — nesting female sea turtles (green turtles and hawksbill turtles) visit the island from October through February. Rangers monitor nests and can facilitate hatchling release viewings when a nest is at emergence stage (timing is unpredictable). A resident ranger patrols the beach nightly during nesting season. Visiting the island outside turtle hours: PHP 50 entry; the beach itself has white sand and good snorkeling. Turtle watching (October–February): notify the Matnog Tourism Office the day before and they will alert you if a release is expected.
The Island-Hopping Circuit
A standard Matnog island-hopping tour covers 3–4 islands in a full day: Calintaan (pink sand), Juag Lagoon (snorkeling), Tikling Island (sea turtle sanctuary), and Subic Island (white sand beach, also with good snorkeling). Private banca charter: PHP 2,500–4,000 for the boat (divide among the group — up to 8 people). Shared tour (join with other visitors at the port): PHP 600–900 per person. Depart at 8 AM for the best light and to reach Tikling before the midday wind picks up.

🗓️ Best time to visit Matnog
November through May is the dry season. March through May has the calmest seas for the island-hopping circuit. December through February is cool and clear — excellent visibility for snorkeling. Sea turtles nest on Tikling Island from October through February; hatchling releases (unscripted, wild) occur erratically during this window. Typhoon season (June–October) can affect the islands; Matnog is in a wind corridor that channels both Pacific and Visayan swell.

Frequently asked questions — Matnog
Do I need to stay in Matnog or can I do it as a day trip from Sorsogon or Legazpi?
Day trip from Sorsogon City is feasible — 1 hour to Matnog, island-hopping 8 AM to 3 PM, return by 5 PM. From Legazpi it is a longer day (1.5–2 hours each way) but still doable as a long day trip if you depart by 6 AM. Staying in Matnog (basic guesthouses PHP 500–800/night) gives the most relaxed experience and allows an early morning island departure. Staying in Sorsogon City (more accommodation options, PHP 800–1,500/night) and doing a day trip is the most practical option for most visitors.
Is Matnog's pink sand as pink as Great Santa Cruz in Zamboanga?
Both beaches share the same Foraminifera coloring mechanism and the pinkness is similar in intensity — a blush rather than a vivid rose. Matnog's Calintaan is the more accessible of the two from Luzon; Zamboanga's Great Santa Cruz requires a cross-country flight. If you are doing the Manila-Visayas overland route and passing through Matnog anyway, adding a half-day for the islands is easy. Going to Zamboanga specifically for the pink sand requires more commitment.
How does Matnog island-hopping compare to Donsol?
Donsol (40 minutes north of Matnog) is famous specifically for whale shark snorkeling (in season, February–May). Matnog has the island-hopping circuit, pink sand, and the sea turtle sanctuary — a different kind of natural experience. The two are complementary rather than competitive and can be combined in a 3–4 day Sorsogon itinerary: Donsol whale sharks + Matnog islands.
