Malaybalay
Bukidnon's highland capital — pineapple plateaus, the Philippines' longest zipline, and Lumad indigenous culture · Bukidnon, Northern Mindanao

Malaybalay is the capital of Bukidnon province in central Mindanao — a highland city at 600 metres elevation surrounded by the Philippines' most productive pineapple and corn-growing plateau. The landscape is unusual for the Philippines: rolling green upland hills, cool highland air (22-28C year-round), and none of the beachside resort development that characterises most Philippine tourism. Bukidnon's draws are fundamentally different: the Dahilayan Forest Park (home to the Philippines' longest dual-cable zipline at 840 metres, flying over old-growth pine forest), the Kiokong Falls waterfall system, the Del Monte pineapple plantation (9,000+ hectares, one of the world's largest), and the Talaandig and Bukidnon Lumad indigenous communities whose weaving, music, and healing ritual traditions are remarkably intact. The gateway city is Cagayan de Oro (CDO), 40km north.
Things to do in Malaybalay
Dahilayan Forest Park zipline (Manolo Fortich)
The Philippines' longest dual-cable zipline — 840 metres at 70-80 km/h, flying over old-growth pine and forest at 1,500m elevation. The setting is genuinely extraordinary: you're racing above Philippine highland forest with volcanic peaks visible beyond. PHP 600-800 for the main zipline. Additional rides (shorter) available.
Trek to Kiokong Falls
A multi-tiered waterfall system in Kiokong barangay — 45 minutes by habal-habal from Malaybalay, then a 45-minute forest trek. The main drop is 25 metres into a clear swimming pool surrounded by cloud-forest vegetation. Very few visitors, excellent swimming. Guide at the trailhead PHP 200-300.
Tour Del Monte pineapple plantation
Bukidnon's Del Monte plantation covers over 9,000 hectares — an agricultural landscape on a scale almost incomprehensible to most visitors. Tours of the packing house and fields (where mechanised harvesting rows of pineapples stretch to the horizon) are arranged through the Del Monte visitor center in Manolo Fortich.
Talaandig cultural village visit
The Talaandig Lumad people of Lantapan municipality have an active cultural center welcoming respectful visitors. Traditional music (using gongs and other instruments), weaving demonstrations, and conversations with community elders offer a rare window into living Lumad culture. Arrange through the Malaybalay City Tourism Office.
San Miguel Falls (Cabanglasan)
A 70-metre plunge waterfall in Cabanglasan municipality — 2 hours south of Malaybalay — one of the tallest in Mindanao and virtually unvisited by tourists. The remote drive through Bukidnon farmland is part of the experience. Arrange through the municipal tourism office; local guide essential.

Frequently asked questions — Malaybalay
Is it better to base in CDO or Malaybalay?
CDO is larger with better accommodation options and international airport access. Malaybalay is ideal if you're spending 2+ dedicated days in Bukidnon — the highland character and proximity to the interior are different from CDO. Dahilayan is between the two (20km from Malaybalay, 40km from CDO) — easily reached from either.
When is the Kaamulan Festival?
Kaamulan is held the last week of February through the first week of March in Malaybalay. Seven Lumad tribes of Bukidnon perform traditional dances, rituals, and sports at the Kaamulan Grounds. One of the most authentic indigenous cultural festivals in the Philippines and very rarely attended by foreign tourists.
Is Bukidnon safe?
Malaybalay city, the CDO-Malaybalay-Davao highway, and the main tourism circuit are safe. Some remote interior municipalities have intermittent NPA insurgency advisories — check current DFA/LGU guidance before venturing off the main highway into interior barangays.
