Calbayog
Western Samar's waterfall capital — hidden falls, cave systems, and a genuine Philippine off-the-beaten-path experience · Western Samar, Eastern Visayas
Calbayog City is the largest city in Western Samar province — a place few international travellers reach despite having some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Eastern Visayas. The Bangon Falls system (three connected tiers in a coconut-grove forest), the Tarangban curtain waterfall (a wide cascade you can walk directly behind), and the Daang Hari Cave network (an underground river system requiring wading) are the main drawcards. Calbayog is also a transit point for inter-island travel between Samar and Bicol — the National Highway passes through, connecting Tacloban with the Catbalogan-San Juanico Bridge route west. The rural Samar landscape — river valleys, coconut groves, and a culture deeply tied to fishing and rice farming — is a genuinely authentic Philippines that mainland-resort travel rarely touches.
Things to do in Calbayog
Tarangban Falls (Oquendo)
The most photographed falls in Calbayog — a wide curtain waterfall you can walk directly behind, standing in the curtain of falling water. 30-40 minutes from the city center by habal-habal (PHP 150-250 round-trip). Entrance PHP 50-100. Spectacular after rain.
Bangon Falls triple cascade
Three connected waterfalls in Bangon barangay (40-45 minutes from the city) — a series of cascades ending in a large swimming pool. The 30-minute forest trek through coconut groves to reach them is as pleasurable as the falls themselves. Local guides available at the trailhead (PHP 200-300).
Daang Hari Cave spelunking
An underground cave system with accessible chambers and a tunnel section requiring wading through a chest-deep underground river. SAMAT Tourism organises guided cave tours — helmet, headlamp, and willingness to get wet are required. PHP 300-500. The combined river + cave experience is extraordinary.
Calbayog City Market dawn breakfast
The public market opens at 4am — fresh catch from night fishing boats, grilled on charcoal while you wait. Low plastic tables, strong local coffee, and the city waking up around you. A complete grilled-fish breakfast with rice PHP 100-200. The market is at its most vibrant 5-8am.
Malajog Beach (Araw-Araw)
A pleasant beach along the national highway south of the city — palm-lined, sheltered, and calm. Not spectacular by Palawan standards but a good swimming spot and a local favourite for late afternoon. Free public access.

🗓️ Best time to visit Calbayog
December through April for drier conditions (though Samar has no true dry season). The waterfalls are most impressive June through November after heavy rain, but trail access can be slippery. Avoid approaching the caves during or after heavy rain — underground rivers rise rapidly.

Frequently asked questions — Calbayog
How do I get to the falls from the city?
Habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) is the primary mode — PHP 150-250 round-trip to Tarangban; PHP 200-350 to Bangon (slightly further). Agree the price before departure. A knowledgeable habal-habal driver can serve as informal guide for both falls in a single half-day.

Calbayog City and the national highway corridor are safe. Some interior municipalities of Samar have NPA insurgency advisories — stay on established tourist routes. Check DFA advisories if planning any rural or interior travel beyond the city.
Can I combine Calbayog with Catbalogan in one trip?
Easily — Catbalogan (the provincial capital of Western Samar) is 2 hours east by bus. Many travellers combine both: Calbayog for waterfalls and caves, Catbalogan for the coastal town atmosphere and Sohoton Natural Bridge day trip.
