Biri Island, off the northern tip of Samar in Eastern Visayas, has rock formations unlike anything else in the Philippines. The island's exposed northern and western shores face the open Pacific, and the waves that have rolled in from the typhoon belt for millennia have carved the volcanic basalt into shapes that defy the geological vocabulary tourists usually bring to the conversation: honeycombed channels, arch-roofed grottos, flat black platforms veined with white quartz that the sea washes over in rhythm, and a series of named formations — Magasang, Bel-At, Laya, and Macay among them — that range from cathedral-like rock corridors to a flat platform fractured into hexagonal cells like a basalt organ pipe. Biri is one of the least-visited destinations in the Eastern Visayas, which is itself one of the least-visited regions in the Philippines. Getting here requires commitment: a flight to Catarman, a land crossing to Allen Port, and a pump-boat to the island. The reward is a coastline that feels genuinely wild.

Things to do in Biri Island

The Rock Formation Circuit

The main activity on Biri Island is walking the circuit of the named rock formations along the western and northern coasts. The standard circuit covers Magasang (the most famous — a series of channels and arches in black basalt with water rushing through at high tide), Bel-At (flat platform with hexagonal fractures, often with waves washing over), Laya (taller formations with cave-like chambers), and Macay (further along the coast, with a natural pool good for swimming in calm conditions). A guide from the Biri Tourism Office is required (PHP 200–300/day) — the trail markings are inconsistent and the coastal terrain involves scrambling. Allow 4–5 hours for the full circuit.

Wave Watching at High Tide

The rock formations are visually most impressive at high tide when the Pacific swell runs through the channels and crashes over the platforms in white foam. Timing a visit to coincide with a moderate swell and high tide in the morning light (the formations face west and northwest, so morning light is side-lit) produces the most dramatic photography. The local guides know the tide tables; confirm the morning departure time based on tide prediction.

Swimming at the Natural Rock Pools

Several of the rock formation areas have natural pools fed by the ocean but partially sheltered by rock — good for swimming in calm conditions. Macay formation has the most frequently cited pool. Swimming at any of these sites in large swell or during high wave activity is not safe; the guides assess conditions on the day.

Island Trekking and Viewpoints

Biri Island's interior is hilly secondary forest accessible via trails from the main town. The highest point gives views over the surrounding sea and the rock formation coastline. The trail takes 1.5–2 hours return. Biri town itself is a small fishing community where pump-boat building is still a local craft — the traditional wooden bancas used for inter-island transport are assembled in backyard workshops visible from the main road.

🗓️ Best time to visit Biri Island

November through May is the window, with March through May being the calmest and clearest. The rock formations are most dramatic in moderate wave conditions (1–1.5m swell) which occur November through February — waves crash through the rock channels dramatically but the platforms are still accessible. June through October is typhoon season; the exposed coast is genuinely dangerous in storm swell.

✈️ How to get to Biri Island

Fly from Cebu or Manila to Catarman Airport (CRM), Northern Samar (Cebu Pacific, PAL Express — 1 hour from Cebu, 1.5 hours from Manila, PHP 1,500–3,500). From Catarman, take a van or bus to Allen Port (1 hour, PHP 80–120), then a pump-boat to Biri Island (20–30 minutes, PHP 80–120 per person, multiple departures daily). Alternatively, the San Isidro–Allen ferry from Luzon (from Matnog, Sorsogon — 2 hours) lands at Allen Port if combining Biri with a Bicol trip. Basic accommodation is available in Biri town.

Frequently asked questions — Biri Island

Is Biri Island worth the effort to get to?

For travellers interested in dramatic natural landscapes and genuinely off-the-beaten-track destinations, yes — the rock formations are unlike anything else in the Philippines. For beach-focused travellers, it is not the right destination (the swimming is limited and the beaches are not the point). The effort is real: two flights, a land crossing, and a pump-boat. Build 2–3 nights into the itinerary minimum.

What is the difficulty level of the rock formation walk?

Moderate. The terrain involves walking on uneven, sometimes wet basalt, scrambling over rock ridges, and navigating narrow channels between formations. No technical climbing is required, but regular footwear is inadequate — rubber-soled shoes or hiking sandals with grip are essential. The distance is manageable (3–5km) but the footing demands attention throughout.

Can I combine Biri Island with Samar's other attractions?

Yes. Northern Samar is home to Sohoton National Park (limestone caves and cliffs accessible by river from Catbalogan — 3–4 hours south of Catarman by bus). The combination of Biri Island (rock formations, north) + Sohoton (cave kayaking, south) makes a compelling 5–7 day Eastern Visayas itinerary.

🔒
Safety

Never approach the ocean-facing rock edges when swell is running — waves can surge over the platforms without warning and knock you down.
