Batanes is the northernmost province of the Philippines — a cluster of volcanic islands closer to Taiwan than to Manila, where stone-walled Ivatan villages cling to hillsides swept by the Pacific wind. It feels unlike anywhere else in the country: rolling green hills, dramatic coastlines, ancient architecture, and a pace of life that has not changed in centuries. It is the Philippines' most remote destination and, for many who make the trip, its most unforgettable.

Things to do in Batanes

Naidi Hills Lighthouse at sunset

The red-and-white lighthouse on the hill above Basco is the postcard image of Batanes. Walk or bike up in the late afternoon — the view over the South China Sea and the rolling hills to the east is extraordinary. Entry is free.

Vayang Rolling Hills for sunrise

Drive north from Basco to catch the sunrise over treeless volcanic hillsides that roll down to dramatic sea cliffs. The light in the first hour after dawn is exceptional. Hire a tricycle or motorbike (PHP 150–200/hr) to get there.

Ivatan stone village walk — Ivana and Mahatao

Two of Batanes' best-preserved stone house villages are a short drive south of Basco. Walk the narrow lanes between metre-thick limestone walls, look for vakul headwear (the traditional helmet woven from vuyavuy palm), and stop at the Mahatao Church, one of the oldest in the Philippines.

Sabtang Island day trip

Take the faluwa (a traditional wooden boat) from Ivana Port to Sabtang Island — 30 minutes across open water (PHP 200–250 each way). On the island, visit Chavayan village, walk to Morong Beach, and eat lunch at a local home kitchen. The crossing can be cancelled in rough weather — check conditions the night before.

Racuh A Payaman (Marlboro Hills)

The rolling pasture land in the island's interior where horses and cattle graze against a backdrop of Pacific coastline. Rent a motorbike (PHP 400–500/day) and find it yourself — part of the pleasure is the slow ride through the countryside.

Uvud (rice wine) at a local store

Batanes' traditional fermented rice wine is available at small stores around Basco — a small bottle costs PHP 50–80. Drink it with whatever the day's catch is; the Ivatan food tradition of fresh fish and preserved meat is simple and deeply good.

🗓️ Best time to visit Batanes

May to October is the stable weather window — warm, with manageable wind and clear skies. November to April brings typhoon risk and the Amihan northerly wind that makes the Batan–Sabtang boat crossing unpredictable. Flights are also more likely to be cancelled in the off-season.

✈️ How to get to Batanes

Fly from Manila (NAIA T3) to Basco (BSO) on Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines — the flight is 90 minutes. The critical detail: there are only 2–3 round trips per day on small aircraft, and seats sell out weeks in advance during peak season (May to August). Book flights at least 3 months ahead.

Frequently asked questions — Batanes

How far in advance should I book Batanes flights?

At least 2–3 months ahead for May–August travel. Cebu Pacific and PAL both serve the route (Manila–Basco), but with only 2–3 departures per day on small Dash-8 aircraft, seats go fast. Check both airlines as fares and availability vary significantly.

Can I get stranded in Batanes because of weather?

Yes, and it happens. Typhoons and strong winds can ground flights for 1–3 days with no warning. Bring buffer days at the end of your trip, carry extra cash (Batanes ATMs are unreliable), and pack extra medication or supplies you cannot do without.

Do I need a guide in Batanes?

Not required, but worth having for a first visit. Local guides (PHP 800–1,500/day) know the back roads, can arrange faluwa crossings, and have relationships with village elders who open doors that stay closed to strangers.

Is internet connectivity decent in Batanes?

Mobile data (Globe and Smart) works in Basco town but is patchy across the islands and essentially absent on Sabtang. Download offline maps before you arrive.

First time in Batanes?

Quick essentials so you can hit the ground running.

🛂
Visa

Standard Philippine visa-free entry; no separate permit required for Batanes, but register with the Municipal Tourism Office in Basco on arrival.

💱
Currency

Bring plenty of PHP cash from Manila — ATMs in Basco are scarce, often offline, and have low withdrawal limits; PHP 5,000–8,000 cash for 3 days is a safe buffer.

🏥
Health

Wind and sun exposure in Batanes is intense — wear sunscreen and a windproof layer even on clear days; the northerly gusts can drop the felt temperature significantly.

💳
Money & payments

Card payments are essentially non-existent outside one or two Basco hotels; everything from faluwa fares to guesthouse meals is cash only.

🔒
Safety

Batanes is the Philippines' safest province by any measure — crime is nearly unheard of, and the biggest risks are weather-related (slippery coastal paths in wind, rough boat crossings).
