San Fernando in La Union is the regional capital and transport hub for the Ilocos coast -- bus terminal, provincial hospital and the commercial centre for the surf beaches of San Juan (20 min south) and the colonial heritage of Vigan (2 hrs north). Not a tourist destination in itself but a practical overnight stop on the Luzon north loop.
Getting there
Fly MNL-LAO (Laoag) or take a 6-8 hr Victory Liner bus from Manila.
Best time to visit
November to April — dry season with pleasant temperatures.
