Samar Island is one of the Philippines' largest islands and one of the least-developed for tourism. Catbalogan is the capital. Sohoton Cove in Basey is the standout attraction -- an otherworldly cave and lagoon system accessible only at low tide by boat. The island receives heavy rainfall and is frequently in typhoon paths.
Getting there
Fly MNL-LGP (Legazpi) or overnight bus/train from Manila.
Best time to visit
March to May — whale shark season; November to April for hiking.
