Masbate City is the capital of Masbate, a cattle-ranching island in the Sibuyan Sea often overlooked by tourists. The Masbate Rodeo (April) is the Philippines' only cowboy rodeo festival. Buntod Reef Marine Sanctuary has excellent snorkeling, and Ticao Island offers diving with rare thresher sharks and manta rays.

Fly MNL-LGP (Legazpi) or overnight bus/train from Manila.
Best time to visit
March to May — whale shark season; November to April for hiking.
