Lapu-Lapu City covers Mactan Island beside Cebu City -- home to Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the Lapu-Lapu Shrine commemorating the 1521 Battle of Mactan, and a long strip of beach resorts facing the Mactan Channel. The city is named for the chieftain who defeated Magellan. Most travellers stay here for its airport convenience and resort access.

Fly MNL-LGP (Legazpi) or overnight bus/train from Manila.
Best time to visit
March to May — whale shark season; November to April for hiking.
