Laiya in Batangas is the closest beach area to Manila with decent white sand -- a 2.5-hour drive via SLEX and STAR Tollway. A strip of mid-range beach resorts lines the coastline. Popular for weekend getaways, but gets crowded on holidays. Anilao, 45 minutes further, has far better diving.
Getting there
Fly MNL-LAO (Laoag) or take a 6-8 hr Victory Liner bus from Manila.
Best time to visit
November to April — dry season with pleasant temperatures.
