Cebu is the Philippines in miniature — a buzzing city, UNESCO-worthy heritage, and a south coast that delivers canyoneering, whale sharks and turquoise waterfalls all within a few hours’ drive. It’s the busiest hub in the Visayas and the easiest island to reach from Manila, Singapore or abroad — which makes it the perfect base for longer island adventures.

Things to do in Cebu

🌊 Kawasan Falls canyoneering

Cliff-jump and swim through turquoise canyon pools in Badian — one of the best half-day adventures in the Philippines. Tours from Cebu City take about 3 hours each way (₱1,500–2,500 all-in including guide and fees).

🦈 Oslob whale sharks

Snorkel beside gentle giants at dawn in Oslob, on the south tip of the island. Controversial for the feeding, but if you go, be there by 5:30am before the crowds and boats. About ₱1,000 per person including snorkel gear.

🏖️ Bantayan & Malapascua islands

Two contrasting islands north of Cebu. Bantayan is laid-back with white sand and chill beach bars; Malapascua is the only place in the world to dive with thresher sharks reliably.

🏙️ Historic Cebu City

Magellan’s Cross (1521), the Basilica del Santo Niño, Fort San Pedro and Colon Street — the oldest street in the Philippines. Half a day is enough to cover them all on foot.

🗓️ Best time to visit Cebu

January to May (dry season). Sinulog Festival in the third weekend of January brings massive crowds — book accommodation months ahead or avoid. June–August gets typhoons from the east, but Cebu’s west coast stays mostly sheltered.

✈️ How to get to Cebu

Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) is the main hub of the Visayas — direct flights from Manila (1 hr, from ₱1,500), Singapore (3.5 hrs), Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and more. From the airport to the city: taxi (₱300–500), grab (₱200–350) or airport bus (₱60).

Frequently asked questions — Cebu

Is it ethical to swim with whale sharks in Oslob?

This is a genuine debate. The feeding in Oslob keeps the sharks in an area they wouldn’t naturally stay in, and repeated boat interactions stress them. For a more responsible experience, go to Donsol in Sorsogon (seasonal, truly wild sightings — no feeding). If you do Oslob, arrive early, follow the no-touch rules, and don’t support operators who ignore them.

How do I get from Cebu City to Kawasan Falls?

Take a bus from the South Bus Terminal to Badian (3–3.5 hrs, ₱120–150). Most travellers join a group tour (₱1,500–2,500 all-in from Cebu City) which includes transport, guide, canyoneering fees and sometimes lunch. Easier and not much more expensive than DIY.

Is Cebu safe for solo travellers?

Yes — it’s one of the safest cities in the Philippines. The main tourist areas (Ayala, Colon, Mactan) are well-policed. Use Grab instead of unmarked taxis, don’t flash expensive gear, and you’ll be fine.

Can I do a day trip to Bohol from Cebu?

Yes, but it’s rushed. The fast ferry takes 2 hours each way (₱600–800 return). Most people do the Chocolate Hills, tarsiers and Loboc River in one long day. Better to stay one or two nights in Bohol and do it properly.

What is the best area to stay in Cebu?

Cebu City (near Ayala or IT Park) for business or city exploration. Mactan Island if you want a beach resort with easy airport access. For Kawasan and south coast adventures, stay in Moalboal to save 3 hours of daily driving.
