Aurora province is the gateway to Baler -- the birthplace of Philippine surfing and film location of Apocalypse Now. The Sierra Madre mountains form a dramatic backdrop to the Sabang Beach break. The drive from Manila (5 hrs) winds through mountain passes; the reward is a genuine surf town with almost no package tourism.
Getting there
Fly MNL-LAO (Laoag) or take a 6-8 hr Victory Liner bus from Manila.
Best time to visit
November to April — dry season with pleasant temperatures.
