Aklan province on Panay Island contains Boracay -- the country's most famous beach -- and Kalibo, the alternative budget airport. The Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo (January) is one of the Philippines' oldest and most energetic street festivals. Caticlan, 45 minutes from Kalibo, is the port for the 10-minute boat crossing to Boracay.
Getting there
Fly MNL-LGP (Legazpi) or overnight bus/train from Manila.
Best time to visit
March to May — whale shark season; November to April for hiking.
