Sohoton Cove sits in the Basey municipality of Samar province, a convoluted system of caves, lagoons, and karst formations connected by underground passages and opening onto the Philippine Sea. Within this system is a hidden brackish lagoon that can only be reached by swimming through a submerged cave entrance - and inside that lagoon, millions of stingless jellyfish drift in the warm current. It is one of the most unusual and visually spectacular natural experiences in the Philippines, and it remains relatively unknown compared to the country's beach and island-hopping attractions.
The Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park
Sohoton is a protected area covering around 840 hectares of karst limestone formations along the Basey River delta. The park's most famous feature is the Sohoton Natural Bridge, a rock arch spanning the entrance to the cave system, but for most visitors it is the jellyfish lagoon and the cave networks that are the primary draw. The park is managed by the local government and requires permits and guides for all visits.
The Stingless Jellyfish Experience
The jellyfish lagoon inside the Sohoton cave system contains golden jellyfish (Mastigias papua) in numbers that vary seasonally but can reach thousands visible at any one time. These jellyfish have evolved in enclosed lagoon environments and have lost much of their stinging capacity (they have a mild sting that is essentially imperceptible to most people - hence the "stingless" description, though very sensitive individuals may notice a slight tingling). Swimming among them is a surreal experience: the lagoon glows golden in the shafts of light that filter through the cave ceiling, the jellyfish pulse around you in slow rhythmic contractions, and the silence of the enclosed space amplifies the otherworldly quality of the whole encounter.

Browse tours →Getting into the Lagoon
To reach the jellyfish lagoon you must swim through an underwater passage approximately 5 to 10 meters in length at a depth of roughly 2 meters. Life vests are worn for the passage (the guide inflates them after you pass through). You do not need to be a strong swimmer but you must be comfortable putting your face in the water and swimming a short distance. The passage is tight but navigable - your guide will go first and demonstrate the technique. Children above a certain age and adults of any fitness level can typically do it with confidence after the briefing.
The Cave Cathedral
Adjacent to the jellyfish lagoon is a cave chamber known as the Cathedral, where stalactites and stalagmites create a Gothic-scale natural interior lit by filtered daylight and, during guided tours, by lanterns. The sound in the chamber - dripping water, the distant rush of the river, the echo of your own breathing - adds to the experience. This is one of several cave chambers accessible within the Sohoton system, and guided tours typically cover two to three chambers in a single visit.
Getting to Sohoton Cove
Sohoton is most commonly accessed from Tacloban City in Leyte, taking the ferry across the San Juanico Strait to Samar then driving south to Basey municipality. The journey from Tacloban takes approximately 2 to 3 hours including the ferry. From Basey, boats take you into the cave system. Most visitors join guided group tours that handle all logistics. Alternatively, Sohoton can be reached from Calbayog City in northern Samar, though this routing is less common. The journey is long relative to the time spent at the attraction itself - allow a full day minimum, or consider an overnight stay in Basey or Tacloban to make the logistics more manageable.
Practical Tips
- Visit during the dry season (November to May) when jellyfish numbers are highest and water visibility is best
- Jellyfish populations are seasonal and vary - there is no guarantee of specific numbers on any given day
- Wear dark-colored swimwear - lighter colors attract the jellyfish more strongly (an interesting rather than dangerous experience, but worth knowing)
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen but do not apply it in the lagoon - the jellyfish are in a sensitive enclosed ecosystem
- Photography inside the cave is challenging - a GoPro or similar waterproof action camera on a wide-angle setting works best
Combining with Other Samar and Leyte Highlights
Sohoton pairs naturally with a visit to Leyte's historical sites (the MacArthur Landing Memorial at Red Beach, Tacloban itself) and with Calbayog City's waterfalls in northern Samar. The Enchanted River in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur - another extraordinary natural site - is in the same broader region and can be combined if you have several days to explore eastern Mindanao and the Visayas.
