Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, is the widest waterfall in the Philippines. It drops over three tiers of mossy limestone shelves, each up to 95 meters wide, into a pool surrounded by primary rainforest. The falls have the width and the layered character of Niagara without Niagara's industrial surroundings - here the forest presses in on all sides, the mist drifts through the trees in a perpetual slow curtain, and the sound of the water fills the entire valley. It is one of the most spectacular waterfall experiences in Southeast Asia, and it is almost completely unknown outside the Philippines.
The Three Tiers
Tinuy-an Falls is actually a series of three cascades stacked one above the other. The lowest and widest tier is the most photographed - this is where the full 95-meter width is visible and where the pool at the base is deep enough for swimming. The middle tier is narrower but more powerful, the water funneling from the wider upper section through a constricted channel before spreading again. The upper tier is the most remote and least visited, requiring a separate trail. Most visitors see the lower and middle tiers in a single visit.
Swimming at Tinuy-an Falls
Swimming is permitted and encouraged in the lower pool. The water is cool (around 20 degrees Celsius - dramatically cooler than the surrounding lowland heat) and clear enough to see the bottom. Bamboo rafts with local guides take visitors across the pool and position them close to the falling water - close enough that the mist soaks you within seconds, close enough to feel the vibration of the cascade in your chest. This is one of those waterfall experiences where photographs capture less than 10 percent of the sensory reality.

Bislig City is in the southeastern corner of Mindanao. The most common routes:
- From Davao City: 5 to 6 hours by bus along the coastal highway (via Tagum and Digos). The RRCG bus company runs direct Davao to Bislig services.
- From Surigao City: 4 to 5 hours south by bus or van through the Pacific coast highway.
From Bislig City, the falls are approximately 30 kilometers inland, accessible by tricycle or habal-habal (motorbike) in about 45 minutes to 1 hour on a mix of paved and unpaved road. Entry fee: 50 to 100 pesos for the national park, plus 150 to 200 pesos for the bamboo raft ride.
What to Bring
- Spare dry clothes - you will get completely soaked at the lower tier, whether or not you go on the bamboo raft
- Waterproof bag for your phone and camera
- Water shoes or closed-toe footwear - the trail to the falls involves rocks and river crossings
- Swimming attire under your clothes for quick-changing
- Cash for entrance and raft fees - no card facilities at the falls
Where to Stay Near Tinuy-an Falls
Bislig City has basic accommodation (small hotels and guesthouses at 400 to 1,000 pesos per night) for those making the falls the primary destination. Most visitors combine Tinuy-an with either the Enchanted River in Hinatuan (about 2 hours north) or with a stay in Davao as a southern Mindanao road trip. The falls reward the journey required to reach them - plan to spend a full morning here before continuing to the next destination.
Why Nobody Talks About It
Tinuy-an Falls suffers from geography. It sits in one of the most remote corners of Mindanao, far from the international airports and the established tourist corridors of Davao and CDO. The travel time is significant and the logistics require planning. But these same factors mean that when you arrive, you find a waterfall of extraordinary scale in essentially undisturbed primary forest, with a fraction of the visitors that comparably spectacular falls in Southeast Asia attract. For travelers who have already done Palawan and Bohol and want to see a Philippines that genuinely few international visitors reach, Tinuy-an Falls is the answer.
