Cebu Itinerary 5 Days: The Perfect First-Timer's Guide

Why Five Days?

Cebu is the Philippines' second city and a major regional hub — but more importantly for travelers, it's the gateway to some of the country's finest natural attractions within a very compact geographic area. Five days gives you enough time to experience Cebu City's historical layers, the extraordinary marine and adventure offerings of the south coast, and a ferry crossing to Bohol for its iconic interior landmarks. It's a full itinerary that rewards planning without being exhausting.

Day 1: Cebu City — History and Food

Arrive in Cebu, check into your accommodation (Lahug, IT Park, or the Colon/Fuente area are all good bases), and spend the day exploring the city's historical core. Start at the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino — the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines, built in 1565, and home to the oldest religious relic in the country (the Santo Nino statue given to Queen Juana by Magellan). Adjacent is Magellan's Cross, planted by the Portuguese explorer during the baptism of Rajah Humabon in 1521.

Lunch at the Carbon Market area (Cebu's oldest and largest market) for local food at local prices. Afternoon: explore Fort San Pedro, the smallest Spanish fort in the Philippines, and the Heritage of Cebu monument in Parian. Evening: the Sugbo Mercado night market or dinner in the IT Park food court for a spread of Cebuano food and international options.

Day 2: Oslob Whale Sharks + Tumalog Falls

Early start — pre-dawn departure to reach Oslob by 6am for the whale shark interaction before the biggest crowds arrive. Swim with whale sharks (see our full Oslob guide for what to expect and the ethical considerations). After the interaction, head to Tumalog Falls — 2km from the whale shark site, one of Cebu's most beautiful waterfalls. Return to Cebu City by afternoon. This is a long day (300km round trip) best done with a hired van or a booked tour.

Day 3: Kawasan Falls Canyoneering or Moalboal Marine Life

Choose your adventure for day 3 based on preference:

Option A — Kawasan Falls Canyoneering: The most physically demanding option — a 4-5 hour river descent through canyons, water slides, and cliff jumps culminating at the famous turquoise falls. Requires a full day but delivers the most memorable single-day experience of the trip. Full Kawasan guide here.

Option B — Moalboal: More relaxed, marine-focused. The sardine run and sea turtle snorkeling at Panagsama Beach are world-class and accessible without significant physical effort. Combine with a dive if you're certified. Moalboal sardine run guide here.

Day 4: Bohol Day Trip — Chocolate Hills, Tarsiers, Loboc River

Take the morning fast ferry from Cebu City Pier 1 to Tagbilaran, Bohol (2 hours). Hire a van with driver-guide for the day's circuit: Chocolate Hills (awe at the geological impossibility), Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary (wonder at the impossibly small primate), and Loboc River lunch cruise (pleasure at floating through jungle with a buffet lunch). Return ferry to Cebu City in the late afternoon. Full details in our Cebu-Bohol day trip guide.

Day 5: Temples, Shopping and Departure

Use your final morning for anything you missed or want to revisit. The Taoist Temple in Beverly Hills (the Chinese district) is a beautiful and undervisited alternative to the standard heritage sites. Ayala Center Cebu and SM City Cebu handle any last-minute shopping. Or simply spend the morning in one of Cebu City's excellent cafes with a good coffee and the particular satisfaction of a well-traveled final morning.

Logistics Summary

Final Word

The Cebu five-day itinerary covers more genuine variety than most week-long itineraries to other destinations. You'll have swum with whale sharks, descended a canyon, seen the sardine run, watched the Chocolate Hills at sunset, met a tarsier, and floated down a jungle river — all within a 100km radius. The Philippines' density of natural wonders, when accessed through Cebu as a hub, is simply remarkable. Go.
