About this tour

The Yakan people of Basilan Island and Zamboanga City produce what many textile scholars consider the most technically demanding traditional fabric in Southeast Asia. Woven on simple backstrap looms, Yakan cloth features geometric patterns — called bunga sama, pis siyabit, and dozens of other named designs — that encode family histories, social status, and spiritual beliefs in sequences of color and form. This tour brings you into contact with the weavers themselves, not a cultural museum exhibit.

The community visit begins with an introduction to Yakan history from a cultural guide who speaks both Yakan and English. In the weaving area, you watch as women (and occasionally men) work the backstrap loom with practiced precision — the shuttle moving faster than seems possible given the complexity of the emerging pattern. The guide explains how each design is memorized from childhood, passed mother to daughter, and how the full meaning of a complete ceremonial cloth can take months to weave and years to fully decode.

Beyond the weaving, the community offers a glimpse into everyday Yakan domestic life: the raised wooden houses, the preparation of traditional foods like baulo (sweet rice cake), and the musical tradition of the agung gong ensemble. It is a genuine cultural exchange in a city that sits at the intersection of three of Southeast Asia's great civilizational currents — indigenous Austronesian, Islamic maritime, and Spanish colonial.
