Vigan Abel Weaving Traditional Textile Workshop

Abel Iloco is the handwoven cotton textile of the Ilocos region — geometric, durable, and produced on backstrap and treadle looms that have changed little since the 17th century. The patterns carry information: clan identity, life events and regional pride encoded in repeating geometric forms. A skilled weaver can identify the origin town of a piece from the pattern alone.

This 2-hour workshop in Vigan's weaving district puts you at a working treadle loom under the guidance of a master weaver from a family that has practiced the craft for generations. You begin with the warp — understanding how tension, thread count and colour sequence generate the final pattern — then practice the shuttle throw and beater press that create the characteristic tight weave of abel.

Vigan's weaving workshops operate in the same ancestral houses you pass on the cobblestone streets of Crisologo — meaning the craft context is the city itself, a UNESCO World Heritage site that preserved Spanish-Filipino architecture and Ilocano tradition together.
