Sumilon Island Blue Lagoon Day Trip
About this tour
Sumilon Island is small (less than a kilometre across), but the images it produces are extraordinary — a white-sand sandbar curving into water that shifts from sky blue to emerald to deep cobalt depending on the angle of the sun. The Blue Lagoon, a sheltered cove on the island's leeward side, has water so clear and calm it functions as a natural infinity pool, perfect for floating, snorkeling and underwater photography.
The island is home to the first marine sanctuary established in the Philippines (1974), and decades of protection have paid off — the reef around Sumilon is one of the healthiest in the Visayas, alive with clownfish, parrotfish, sea turtles and occasional reef sharks. Snorkeling here is superb even for beginners: visibility routinely exceeds 20 metres and the reef begins in knee-deep water.
The trip is often combined with an Oslob whale shark encounter in the early morning, making for one of the Philippines' best double-header days: whale sharks at dawn, Blue Lagoon by mid-morning, cold drinks on the sandbar in the afternoon. Your guide manages the logistics so you don't have to think about anything except which shade of blue to look at next.

About the area
Sumilon Island is owned by the Bluewater resort chain, which manages visitor access and the marine sanctuary. It's located off the coast of Oslob, 3.5 hours south of Cebu City. Most visitors combine it with the Oslob whale shark interaction — the two sites are just 20 minutes apart by boat.
The sandbar is most dramatic at low tide. Tidal tables are checked before departure so your visit is timed for the best conditions. See our Cebu guide for the full south-Cebu itinerary including Oslob, Sumilon and Kawasan Falls over two or three days.
