About this tour

No experience in the Philippines quite compares to slipping into warm turquoise water as a 10-metre whale shark glides silently beneath you. Oslob, a sleepy fishing village on Cebu's southern coast, is one of only a handful of places on Earth where you can reliably encounter these gentle giants — and a day trip from Cebu City delivers you there with minimal fuss.

Your morning starts early. Wading shallows-side with the butanding (local name for whale sharks) is a bucket-list moment that no photo fully captures — the sheer scale, the dappled light, the rows of white spots on a back wider than your armspan. Time in the water is typically 30 minutes, so make every second count. After the encounter, the boats head ashore for breakfast while your heart rate returns to normal.

The afternoon stars Tumalog Falls, a short drive inland — a gossamer curtain of water tumbling into a jade pool, fringed by mist and tree ferns. It is jaw-droppingly beautiful and blissfully cooler than the coast. Combined, these two stops make for one of the most-photographed and most-shared days in all of Southeast Asia.

About the area

Oslob sits at the southern tip of Cebu island, roughly 3–4 hours by bus or 2.5 hours by private van from Cebu City. The whale shark interaction site is just off Tan-awan Beach, where local fishermen have been feeding the sharks since 2011. The programme is controversial among marine conservationists — if this concerns you, consider a responsible-diving alternative in open water — but it remains one of Cebu's most popular day trips.

Combine the trip with a stop at Sumilon Island or the Boljoon church for a fuller south-Cebu itinerary. Our Cebu travel guide covers transport, accommodation and the best season to visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to swim with whale sharks in Oslob?
Yes — whale sharks are filter feeders and completely harmless to humans. Guides enforce a 4-metre minimum distance from the head and tail. You may not touch or ride the animals.
What time does the tour start?
Departure from Cebu City is typically 3–4am to reach Oslob by sunrise (around 6am) when the water is calmest and the sharks most active. It is an early start but very much worth it.
Can non-swimmers join the tour?
Yes. You can watch from the boat or wade in the shallows — lifejackets are provided. The whale shark area is very shallow (1–3 m near shore) so even non-swimmers can get close.
