Siargao Spearfishing with Local Fishermen
About this tour
Siargao's fishing community has been spearfishing its reef waters for generations, and this half-day experience connects travellers directly with that tradition. You join a crew of local fishermen — men who can freedive to 10-15 metres on a single breath — for a morning session on reefs accessible only to those who know the island's unmarked channels.
The session opens with a safety and technique briefing: equalisation, breath-hold basics, underwater navigation and the ethical guidelines for sustainable spearfishing (only invasive species or abundant quota species are targeted). Beginners stay in shallower reef areas; experienced freedivers can push deeper with the crew. The guides use traditional wooden Hawaiian slings rather than compressed-gas spearguns, maintaining the craft element of the tradition.
Whatever is caught is cleaned on the boat and cooked on the beach by the crew — fresh fish grilled over coconut charcoal with calamansi and sea salt, eaten with rice and the casual satisfaction of a morning that was genuinely productive. It is one of Siargao's most authentic experiences, connecting you to the island as it functions rather than as it performs for tourists.

About the area
Siargao's reef systems extend over 40 km of coastline, with areas ranging from shallow coral gardens to deep wall dives. The island's fishing community still practises traditional methods alongside the surf and tourism economy, and the reefs remain among the Philippines' healthiest because of this community-led management.
