Sagada Hanging Coffins + Echo Valley Walk
About this tour
The hanging coffins of Sagada are among the most visually striking funerary traditions in the world — rectangular pine boxes, some over 500 years old, nailed or wedged into the limestone cliffs above Echo Valley by the Igorot people of the Cordillera. The practice places the dead closer to the heavens (and ancestral spirits), and far from the moisture and scavengers of the ground below. The oldest coffins are weathered to silver-grey; more recent ones are a warmer honey-brown, still sharp against the cliff face.
The walk from Sagada town to Echo Valley is a 30-minute descent through pine forest on a clearly marked path, passing the Anglican Church and Cemetery — where Western-style graves sit in juxtaposition with traditional burial practices just a few hundred meters further into the valley. The cliff face where the coffins are fixed comes into view gradually, dozens of boxes at different heights, some accessible by ladder (placed there by the families who carried loved ones up), some on sheer faces that defy explanation of how they got there.
The valley's name comes from its acoustic properties — a shout from the viewing area bounces back clearly off the cliff walls. The guide explains Igorot cosmology: the belief that the soul (anito) remains active after death and can influence the living; the burial rituals involving rice wine, songs, and communal feasts; and why the practice is still carried out today by some Sagada families. A quiet, contemplative experience that travels far beyond the Instagram-famous image.
