Sagada Spelunking — Cave Connection Adventure
About this tour
The Cave Connection in Sagada is widely considered the most exhilarating outdoor activity in the Philippine Cordillera — and for good reason. The route enters Sumaging Cave (also called Big Cave), descends through a series of rock chambers with otherworldly limestone formations, and exits nearly a kilometer away through Lumiang Cave — passing hundreds of centuries-old burial coffins stacked at the cave entrance. The whole traverse crosses the belly of the mountain.
The journey is physically demanding. You'll wade through cold underground rivers, squeeze through tight rock passages, rappel down smooth limestone faces using rope loops, and climb slippery boulders using nothing but your hands and the guide's instructions. There is no artificial lighting — you carry lanterns (kerosene lamps, Sagada-style) whose amber glow turns the cave into something from a dream. When you finally see daylight filtering through the Lumiang entrance between ancient pine coffins, the relief and exhilaration hit simultaneously.
A licensed Sagada guide is mandatory (and worth every peso). The caves are within the Sagada municipality, managed by the local government, and permits are issued at the tourist office. Group size is capped by the local authority. The experience is suitable for reasonably fit adults with no prior caving experience — but claustrophobics should consider the gentler Sumaging Cave tour instead. Wear clothes you don't mind destroying, and surrender your phone to a dry bag.
