About this tour

Mount Pinatubo erupted on June 15, 1991 in an event so catastrophic it temporarily cooled the global climate by half a degree and reshaped 200 square kilometres of Luzon landscape. The lahar flows that followed over the next five years buried entire towns under metres of grey volcanic mud. Three decades on, that same catastrophe has created the most dramatic trekking landscape in the Philippines โ€” a moonscape of grey canyons, steaming vents, and at the summit, the impossibly beautiful turquoise crater lake.

The approach from the Capas side in Tarlac is the classic Pinatubo route. The 4x4 Jeepney crosses multiple channels of the Pasig-Potrero lahar river system, where flash floods have cut canyon walls 20-30 metres deep into the volcanic deposits. The scale of what erupted from this mountain in 1991 becomes viscerally clear when you understand that these canyons are carved through debris that fell from the sky. The Aeta guides โ€” members of the indigenous Aeta people who lived on Pinatubo's slopes for thousands of years before the eruption โ€” lead the trek with a combination of ecological knowledge and personal memory of the evacuation that gives this experience a human depth rare in adventure tourism.

The crater lake at the summit is the reward for the 3-hour climb: an otherworldly body of turquoise-green water filling the caldera, its colour caused by dissolved sulphur and the refraction of light through mineral-rich water several hundred metres deep. The lake has grown substantially since 1991 and continues expanding as the caldera erodes. The rim above it is a narrow ridge of volcanic rock with views in every direction โ€” on a clear day you can see the South China Sea to the west and the Cordillera mountains to the north. Lunch at the crater rim, eating packed meals above an active volcano, qualifies as one of the Philippines' most memorable dining experiences.
