About this tour

The lahar badlands of Capas are one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Philippines — a grey, moon-like canyon system carved by decades of post-eruption floods through the volcanic deposits of Mount Pinatubo's 1991 eruption. Even without hiking to the crater lake, the journey through these canyons in a vintage Land Rover is an experience that conveys the full geological violence of what happened here three decades ago.

The route follows the same river channels used by the Pinatubo trekking jeepneys but in the opposite direction — while trekkers push uphill toward the crater, the safari loops through the lower lahar system where the canyon walls reach their maximum height. In some sections the walls are 25-30 metres of compacted volcanic ash and lahar flow, with razor-sharp erosion patterns that look like a miniature Grand Canyon in grey. When a flash flood passes through these channels during the monsoon season — which can happen even when it is not raining at the base, if it has rained in the mountains above — the water level can rise metres in minutes. The guide explains the hydrology of the system while navigating the fords with practiced confidence.

The halfway stop is an Aeta community that has returned to the lower slopes of Pinatubo since the lahar activity stabilised. The Aeta people — the indigenous Negrito group who were the original inhabitants of the Pinatubo area — were among the first to warn about the eruption in 1991 and the last to be believed by Philippine volcanologists. The community now supplements traditional farming and hunting with cultural tourism, and a short stop here adds genuine human context to the geological spectacle of the lahar landscape.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as the Pinatubo trek?
The Land Rover Safari covers the lahar canyon approach but does not go all the way to the crater lake. It is designed for travellers who want the dramatic volcanic landscape experience without the physical demands of the full trek.
How rough is the off-road terrain?
Expect river crossings, deeply rutted tracks, and significant bouncing over lahar boulders. The Land Rovers are prepared for these conditions but passengers should secure loose items and hold on firmly.
