About this tour

Paoay Lake is a 900-hectare freshwater lake nestled inside a National Protected Area, and it offers an unexpectedly serene half-day escape from the coastal sightseeing trail. A traditional bangka boat drifts you through lily pads and water hyacinths while egrets and kingfishers work the shallows. Local boatmen know every bird species and fishing technique on the lake, making this as much a cultural experience as a nature one.

Just a few kilometres away stands one of Ilocos Norte's most quirky colonial relics: the Sinking Bell Tower of Paoay. Built in the 16th century as a watchtower to warn against pirate raids, the structure has been slowly subsiding into the soft ground for centuries, giving it a dramatic lean that makes photographers rejoice. The moss-covered stone and the coconut palms surrounding it create a painterly scene straight out of a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel.

The morning ends with a photo stop at Paoay Church itself — one of four Baroque churches in the Philippines inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its massive lateral buttresses, designed to survive the frequent earthquakes of the Ilocos region, are a masterclass in colonial engineering. Return to Laoag by midday with time to visit the Marcos Museum if desired.
